Practicing with Pastels.

in #art8 years ago (edited)

My tiny workspace is starting to get a little crowded with all the new materials I've been playing with. Today It has been Oil pastels again. My spare time has been spent drawing, blending, scribbling, scraping and blending some more
As my reject pile grew I started to get a better feel for things until I finally had 4 pieces that I'm happy to spend more time on tonight.

Here's what I've learned about oil pastels today!

  1. Cheap £1 shop pastels are a giant pain in the arse to blend, they just sit on the paper refusing to move.pffft I get enough of that waking the kids up every morning.
  2. Using a hair dryer to heat your cheap disobedient oil pastels does force them to move (but not much).
  3. Using oil does make them much easier to blend..Don't use the danish oil you see in the top picture, that's for another project The last thing you want is your picture spontaneously starting a house fire. I actually used baby oil which will take 24 hours to dry.
  4. I may be single-handedly destroying the environment with all the cotton wool buds I have been using.
  5. I need a bigger workspace.

Thanks for reading

Welcome to the club girl! :)

I need a bigger house
@opheliafu needs a bigger house
you need a bigger house

Lets build a house for artists. everyone can rent a space there to work. with lockers and such. pure white 2000w lamps for everyone. Alcohol. Weed. You know what! let's build in in Netherlands they have way better lighting solutions...

We will need a factory actually...
not a bad idea.

Ooh there's a club :D
A steemian art commune sounds fun,
I'll give the weed a miss though.

the steem fest approach it seem appropriate.. I am joking.

The Fabulous Abundant Rainbow Artists.

lol it may be a joke, but it would be pretty amazing to have a steemit art exhibition.

Yeah no weed for me too (What are you like Skapaneas?!?)! But if someone wants to step up a micro-brewery next to my studio space I'll be happy!

Hello colour! How refreshing to see such bright colours.

My blog has been a bit too monotone for a while. But i'm building my supplies back up and finding my old ones so colour will be featuring a lot more now.

I have never used pastels before, but you are making me want to try them out!

they are fun to work with and a lot quicker than the ink projects I've been doing.

I can definitely see how that would be a possibility. Ink takes patience....more than I have. haha

WOOOOW! This is new to me! I have never seen anything like this. How incredible!

Oh you can do quick work with ink to, I just like doing the tiny detailing.

Lovely flowers!

Thank you Anca.

It might just be easier to use regular pastels or oil paints depending on what you need. I went down the oil pastels path years ago and found that it was just easier to use oil paints.

I do want to work up to oil paints, but would like to move out of my corner in the kitchen first. I don't fancy keeping all those mediums where the kids have easy access.

I have the same issue because of my cats. I don't have anywhere I'd be happy to start using my oil paints again because of them.

Your doing a fab job as usual. :)

Do what @opheliafu does and repurpose those rejected pieces!
I love the colors and now I want pastels. LOL I'm going to need an intervention. hahaha... Now... what are you doing with all your yarn? I'm waiting for the next video! :)

Yarn wise at the moment i'm making a project for another steemian, it may be a while before i do another video, my laptop doesn't like video editors and using mobile apps is very limiting (i have to film in 15 min bursts and cant cut little bits out). but their may be some drawing ones from time to time.
