Amazing Multimedia-Remix-Artist: KASUMI

in #art7 years ago

Dear remixers,

today I want to introduce you to the amazing work of an artist called:

Kasumi

Gif taken from her tumblr.

Kasumi is an artist who works in a broad range of media: directing and producing short and feature length experimental films, performing live shows and VJ, creating looping electronic sculptures, designing motion graphics and animated gifs, producing immersive 360 virtual reality pieces and making fine art prints through glitch and data moshing.

Taken from her vimeo profile.

Music video for Y-Love: "FOR MY PEOPLE"

I first discovered her work on vimeo while looking for public-domain footage. The following musicvideo is completely made out of footage from the Prelinger Archives.

Prelinger Archives was founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. Over the next twenty years, it grew into a collection of over 60,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films.

Y-Love is a "jewish gay MC making positive hiphop". You can find him at twitter and facebook.

THE FREE SPEECH ZONE (REDUX)

Another interesting work, I found while digging deeper, is the following piece called "The free speech zone".

A fusion of multi-layered polyphonic sampling, heavy, relentless beats, and scorching satire, “The Free Speech Zone”, a psychedelic Dada/techno opera, is a scathing condemnation of the American government’s quest for world domination through unrelenting mind control.

TED-Talk

In 2015 she did a special TEDxCLE-Talk, a combination of TEDTalks video and live speakers "to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group".

Artist Statement

Here is a small excerpt of here artist statement to get an idea of her motivation:

"My work is about the echo chambers of memory - a perpetual feedback loop that creates consciousness. I use the symbols, images, and gestures that encode meaning and form the units from which we tell our stories, and that paradoxically both limit and expand human possibility."

SHOCKWAVES

Her most notable work might be a movie called SHOCKWAVES, which you can rent on vimeo on demand.

"Koyaanisqatsi meets Natural Born Killers."

Nice post again! Reminds me on Klaus von Bruch.

Sehr gut. Kannte ich noch gar nicht. Danke für den Tipp ;-)

There is something very old-school nineties feel to all this. Being and old nineties rave cyberpunker makes it easy food for me. I never heard of her so thanks! great find.

Glad, you dig it! Your nineties feel is funny cause the footage, that she used, is way older... It somehow reminds me of a music-video from the mid 80s, though:

Paul Hardcastle - 19

Yea, maybe it is also has some of the sample culture of the eighties. But using old material and simple video-animation was really nineties - at least on the techno scene.

However, I'm definitely interested in knowing more about your nineties rave cyberpunk history :-)
