Kind of an interesting effect here. I wonder if you started from an actual picture and painted on top of it, turning it completely into a painting. I suppose that is a good way to get the proportions just right and have an idea where the light and shadow should go. I strangely like this background color you've chosen. A plain neutral, yes, but it somehow is warm and inviting. I like it!
