EEG artefacts during a range of different tasks

in #artefacts6 years ago

Neuro gadgets measure the EEG of a person at the forehead (Fp1). However recordings at this electrode position are heavily polluted by artefacts, in particular EMG. This means that the voltage measured at the forehead will always contain a mix of EEG and EMG. The question is now: how strong is the EMG pollution? To have a rough idea we recorded EMG between the chin and the cheek which certainly should only contain EMG but no EEG. What you see on the screen are two channels: the first from Fp1 (EEG+EMG) and the second one from the chin (EMG only). Note that even at rest these amplitudes are roughly the same meaning that the EEG amplitude is probably much lower and buried in the EMG. To evaluate how much crosstalk there is between the channels we calculated the cross correlation between them. Measured/analysed by Thomas Warrington. Many thanks to the very patient subject!
