A few years ago while at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we were discussing how many paintings (Renoir, Degas, etc) often seemed to represent the "zeitgeist" of the times, featuring scenes and imagery from "high society" (ie. pop culture) of the era as well. Perhaps, to some degree, they were the predecessors to modern day "paparazzi" shots.
