I like you, she said.
He nodded. There was no need to say what both of them felt so naturally at the age of five.
I love you, he whispered in her ear.
It was nothing more than a sigh. The only thing she clearly understood was when he declared that, at only 15 years old, he had to leave to make his fortune.
I'll be back soon, he wrote. He never amassed the fortune he had hoped for. Full of doubt, the 25-year-old left the letter with the postman.
I built us a home. Just a few more stitches and his slippers will be ready. Will he be coming back soon? Every day at around the same time, the 35-year-old woman waited for the man of her dreams...
Time always seemed to stand still when she stood in the doorway... surely he would come?

Dreams and promises seem to be twin sisters. They rarely come to fruition, especially in matters of love. The bit about knitting slippers reminded me of Penelope. It's always wonderful to read you.

If it were today, she wouldn't wait. In fact, when the man arrives, if he ever does, she'd already have two children, and he'd have one. There's the dream family, only it's not their own.
