I thought "is it appropriate or even good to make beautiful images of a place with an Ugly history?" << You're not the only one. I was in a group with @adetorrent and he told me the same thing!
I'm so pleased you remember this conversation. I had a look at some of my photos today, and I'm still really struggling with sharing them.
A lot of photography is about the light. Patterns and lines also play an important part in a beautiful photograph. All three of these are depressingly present at Auschwitz. Combined with the emotion of the place, many photos will inevitably appear visually "beautiful" , which is so far from reality.
Yeah i mean to be honest it was a photogenic location... we can refrain from the word beautiful. But yeah it's a weird situation glad to hear i wasn't alone.
