WHAT IS ORGANIC COFFEE?

Everything organic is said to be good. Then what kind of coffee is said to be organic?

WE have entered into an era when everything that is consumed and used often refers to the word "organic". Human awareness about this organic matter is indeed good because it affects the health of consumers and friendliness to the universe which is getting old.

Talking organic cannot be separated from coffee. Coffee has now entered the organic realm because people who consume it are aware of the importance of organic coffee. Not just certification, organic in coffee actually includes several things. Then we come to this question, what kind of coffee can be said to be organic?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, edited from the ethicalcoffee.net site organic coffee is coffee whose coffee production does not use synthetic substances such as pesticides, herbicides and artificial fertilizers. In addition, the organic label is given only if 95% of the coffee beans come from coffee trees grown under “organic and natural conditions”. Usually the organic label is displayed on the coffee packaging and is sealed.

Meanwhile, Byron Holcomb, the agribusiness director of Nobletree Coffee, who is shifting to the myrecipes.com site, said that organic coffee can be said to be organic if the coffee farms have grown their coffee for at least three years without using any chemicals at all. A standard of three years is needed so that the condition of the coffee plantation is truly tested to be clean from chemical touch. The legality of the organic certificate also requires the planting duration of three years.

It turns out that not only organic cultivation is the standard for organic coffee, but also the post-harvest process. Organic coffee must manage coffee waste such as coffee cherry skins and so on properly and not damage the surrounding environment. In other words, organic coffee must be coffee which in a series of processes must not damage the environment at all, not be contaminated with chemical products and is good for the health of workers and drinkers in the future.

Then, does the coffee in Indonesia include organic coffee? The answer may be there, but not all. To make organic coffee, of course, will require a slightly high production cost and conventional agriculture must be educated to get to that level. Even so, organic coffee in Indonesia has now grown and is optimistic that it leads to a better direction.
