SLC30-W4 | 24 Hours Travel Reporter : City Landmark Zone.

So today, I decided to visit a place that is enough to build an estate. It's a federal government property that most people feel they can't do without in this 21st century. They feel if they don't pass through its four walls, they can't be visible or recognised in terms of salary earning. That's the most populous university in my state — University of Uyo. So there's a section I'll be reviewing.
What kind of City Landmark Zone have you visited? Briefly introduce it. |
|---|
Reintroducing the famous University of Uyo, Annex Campus deserves every big shout-out because most of the scholars did graduate from here even though there are other universities in my state. University of Uyo, Annex Campus is the second Campus we had of the federal university in Uyo after the town campus campus was built in 1991.
This is the annex section of the university while the main section are on two different places. The need for more campuses was there because the town campus alone couldn't contain half of the faculties in one and that's how University of Uyo, Annex building came about. It's usually Uniuyo Annex with a significant grey-coloured bridge that connects the town campus from the annex.
It's located at Ikpa road and also shares extension with Ikot Ekpene Road to show how large this campus is. The linkage that connects it with Ikot Ekpene Road is the second entrance you can use to the university. It's one of the famous campuses with a single male hostel building.
The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Chris Ekong who was currently elected and replaced as successor to Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo. It's also the campus with the first CBT center which the Joint Admission Matriculation Board JAMB use to host their exams with a lot of organisation. I think this is the best I could use to introduce this annex campus. It's popular for its CBT centre which is a service rendered to students and and aspirants
The campus has a lot of departments and facilities which houses a whole lot of faculties. I'll talk about this after stating the services they offer both in and out of this university.
How were the services and history both inside and outside? How were the services and history both inside and outside? |
|---|
Starting from the exterior. Talking about the type of place this place is, businessmen and women gather by the roadside, fence and entrance to sell their market because that's where it blossoms most. The number of students entering he premises and leaving is quite incredible and if you're constantly there,you can make more money if you have what students wants. So some services provided outside school include;
- Street foods
- Puff Puff
- Clothing and household materials
- Light snacks
- Mini stationary and the likes.

picture of the services outside.
They aren't allowed inside the school premises until they meet with certain people and pay a little fee, that's when they can comfortably stay inside the premises. I think people who stays outside sells faster than people who stays inside because early in the morning when hungry students come to the school, they stopped outside to make purchases before going in for lectures as they may not have the opportunity to stroll down to places that sells inside school.
The services offered inside campus is quite vast because that's where you meet people at their most comfortable state.
- Printing, payment of school fees and other registrations: To be honest, this is the department of service that has made the most out of students in the university. It's the most active service area in Uniuyo. If you pass a registration center and you don't see at least one person doing something with those who are in charge, there's something wrong somewhere. They are in charge of helping students pay their fees online, print course forms, make certain payments online and other stuffs

- Roadside snacks vendors: In every section of corners of the university, you'll see a line of roadside snacks vendors with their wheelbarrows or tables, sampling different snacks and drinks that would attract students to come and make purchases or buy. These are the ones most students run to for lunch especially and they make more sells in the afternoon than in the morning.

- Cafeteria: This is the only Cafeteria we have in the 3 campuses and it's an old Cafeteria since 2014 that's why you see the interior to be like an abandoned place. The maintenance level isn't in its best, but it's a place people go to eat good food, not snacks. I think the most visited set of students are those in the hostels since we have a lot of hotels with good population in the campus. They are seen with food flask in the morning and at night especially to purchase food that can hold their stomach for a long period of time.

- Hawkers: There's this set of hawkers that sells what is called Pomo, a certain kind of meat in Nigeria. They are seen in almost every corner, classrooms, lecture halls and the likes. They are just everywhere and that's the service they offer to students inside campus.
- Security personnel and Man 'O War: These people are the backbone of the university as they help in ensuring regular check in and out of vehicles to avoid theft on campus. They also ensure that intruders are stopped at the entrance. How? They'll ask you to show your identification as a student before you're allowed to enter the school premises. Even if you don't have an ID, you must show something or give a reason why you're here.
- Lecturers in different faculties: They offer knowledge impact services to students who come to learn at lecture halls. These lecturers ensure students are given the theoretical and practical aspect of education regardless of their discipline. They have offices they stay and are paid to do this work like teachers.

- Non-teaching Staff: These are the ones who take care of some facilities in the school premises and also head these departments as non-lecturers. These include the hostel, toilets, cleaning services and other facilities they are meant to take care of and assist in ensuring the smooth running of that activity or place.

History and facilities |
|---|
This place is dated back to the years and has a lot of symbolic sculptures that preserves the culture of our country and also read meaning in the minds of students who pass by them. Every sculpture is designed by a student, especially those in the art department and they use these sculptures to beautify the whole school.
. As of November, 20th, 2014, the Cafeteria was inaugurated by the then vice chancellor of the school in person of Professor Kimse. A. B. Okoko. He saw the need of hostelites and decided to make a grand cafeteria to cater for their needs on paid services.

Their building is now used by another department.

These are some of the popular facilities in this institution. They even have a secondary and primary school in the premises.
What is the demand for tourists inside and outside the place? |
|---|
The demand for tourists in the school is high because the tourists are mostly students. Students attend to a lot of activities, gather in a sit-out and have fun, play football in the field and enjoy the solemn nature of the forest area. They also tour the facilities when they are free or when they want to attend lectures. Some students get to know these places for the first time. Those who wants to tour the hostel areas can only do so if they have people inside. So it's mostly students in the campus that are the tourists.
They have the shuttle bus area where students take trips to another campus either to attend lectures or to write an exams. The shuttle buses are parked in this space close to the entrance of the school.
Outside the school premises are passers-by and also students who move in from one campus to another. In the morning, the demand for tourists is on the high because that's the time you see students active in the school compound and the gate is already crowded with people, struggling to enter. The shuttle bus area is always a tight spot because students do struggle to be the first on the shuttle as they don't want to arrive late.
In the afternoon when the sun is very hot, you'll still see students, but not as much as they were in the morning. You'll see students crowding in the roadside snacks places, Cafeteria or registration areas. In the evening, you tend to see fewer students than in the afternoon because students must have retired home by that time.
At night is another crowd especially during this exams period. Most times I wonder how, but don't tend to get the answer directly. It's always massive at night and the whole school is usually very rowdy with people trying to read for their exam.

I went there in the morning to observe the serenity of the forest area and also check if it would be a good site for photographing my clients. Students were struggling to write an exam that morning. In the afternoon, I stayed in a sit-out and discussed with my friend for a while before we had a little refreshment to keep us going.
We then went to the field area to watch the match that was ongoing between two departments. In the evening, we stepped out to return to ITU road. By this time, the school was all dried with students mostly in the hostel seen around the premises.
Some historical places in this institution are the forest area, Barth Ebong lecture hall, old law lecture hall, Cafeteria and the Polaris bank. These places are marked with signs of marble prints on the walls of in stones of the date and what happened during that day. The old buildings you see in here are traced to historical heroes in Nigeria and academic scholars who once taught in the school and left a footprint for people to follow.

If you're a student of University of Uyo, you can visit any campus you want to visit and have a tour as much as you want. Outsiders also come in to tour the school, but if you're coming on school levels, you'll have to pay excursion fee because they'll show you the goat unit that was linked to the birth of different species of goat in Akwa Ibom.
