1. SteemAtlas Pin and Sound Description

Comilla Shalban Buddhist Monastery is a Buddhist temple built by the fourth king of the Dev dynasty in the 8th century AD. It went underground due to a natural disaster. In 1984, the existence of the Buddhist temple was discovered during excavation work. Then the Archaeological Board of Bangladesh excavated the soil and unearthed the entire Buddhist temple. Inside the temple, the items used by the ancient Buddhists, gold and statues, are preserved in the museum. Shalban Buddhist Monastery is located in the Kotbari area of Lalmai Hills in Comilla district.

Entrance schedule and ticket price

The Buddhist monastery is located on the Lalmai Hills and is named Shalban Buddhist Monastery because of the Ghazari (Shalban) trees all around it. There are a total of ... rooms in the Buddhist monastery. Each arm of the Buddhist temple is 167.7 meters long, and the wall thickness is five meters. In ancient times, Buddhist deities from different countries used to come to the Buddhist monastery and preach there. The rooms were used for the accommodation of Buddhist monks. The furniture used by Buddhist monks is kept as an archaeological monument of Bangladesh. Every day, numerous domestic and foreign tourists come to visit Shalban Buddhist Monastery.

2. Short Narrative – The Story Behind the Sounds

After entering the main gate of Shalban Buddhist Monastery, there are several lined streets for tourists to walk. On both sides of each street, there are various types of flowers and trees. It takes about ten minutes to walk to the main building of the Buddhist Monastery. The buildings of the Buddhist temple are preserved below the ground by cutting into the mountain. To enter the Buddhist temple, there is a main gate on the north side of the temple. Tourists enter the Buddhist temple through the main gate on the north side. The rooms of the Buddhist temple are still partially underground. Tourists enter each room and take pictures with their families.

Map of Shalban Buddhist Monastery

The ancient buildings were built with great precision. Despite being underground due to natural disasters, the buildings were not damaged much. Tourists with their families are walking around the Buddhist temple. I went up to the Buddhist monastery and made a video of the entire Buddhist temple, where tourists can be seen traveling. The joy of the tourists is creating sounds in the air, which can be heard in my video.

Tourists tour the Shalban Buddhist Monastery

I live in Comilla city. Comilla is my birthplace. I have been visiting Shalban Buddhist Monastery occasionally since childhood. Today, in the second week of my Geo-Quest journey, I have decided to review a historical place in my hometown. In the first week, I wrote about the university where I studied, which is located next to Shalban Buddhist Monastery. In an engagement challenge, I highlighted the beauty of Lalmai Pahar with a picture. Today, I highlighted the archaeological remains of Shalban Buddhist Monastery in the Geo-Quest mystery journey.

3. Two to Four Personal Photos

After I entered the Shalban Buddhist Monastery, I saw tourists all around. The hustle and bustle of tourists encouraged me to visit the place more. Like other tourists, I took pictures while visiting the Buddhist monastery. I have shared some pictures here. In the pictures, you can see the greenery all around, along with the tourists roaming around, which is consistent with the sound of my video. You can find the similarity between the words in my Geo-Quest video and the excitement of the tourists in the pictures.

The main entrance to the Shalban Buddhist Temple

Shalban Buddhist Monastery is very clean and security-controlled as it is managed by the Bangladesh Archaeological Department. All the facilities are available for tourists to visit inside the Buddhist temple. There is a map for visiting the Buddhist temple. I have shown the different parts of the historical site of the Buddhist temple in the picture.

4. Speem.watch Proof Video (20–60 seconds) – Focus on Sound

I record a video according to the conditions of the challenge. In the video record, I give importance to the sound. The sound is clearly audible in the video I recorded. I tried to show the archaeological site along with the sound in the video. I tried to show the place by going to the tourist area. Since the Shalban Buddhist Monastery covers a huge area, I went around one part and recorded the video in a short time. Even then, the duration of my video record increased slightly. I brought sound through the video record, which was the main theme of the challenge.

5. Hidden Sound Challenge – Guess the Sounds

I will read the entire post and watch the video recording in the hidden word challenge and say "How many rooms are there in the Shalban Buddhist Monastery?" Hopefully, Steemian friends will be able to find the word quiz.

Thank you for your participation in Geo-Quest Mystery – Week 2: The Sound Map. Here is an evaluation of the post by @mahadisalim, following the official Week 2 rubric for Geo-Quest Mystery.

Evaluation Summary

CriteriaScoreComments
1. SteemAtlas Pin & Sound Description1.50 / 2.0The SteemAtlas pin is clearly included with coordinates and the location name (Comilla Shalban Buddhist Monastery). The post also provides helpful visitor details (opening hours, ticket information, travel date). The soundscape description is present but remains quite general (mostly tourist excitement). To reach full points, add 3–5 distinct sound layers (footsteps, echoes near structures, wind/trees, distant voices, ticket-counter sounds) and describe how they change across different areas of the site.
2. Creativity of Mission & Hidden Sound Challenge0.60 / 2.0The location is meaningful (a historical site with weekend activity), but the hidden challenge is not sound-based. Asking “How many rooms are there?” is a factual quiz, not a “guess three sounds from hidden clues” task. Also, the room count is left incomplete (“… rooms”). For a higher score, hide three sounds using subtle metaphor clues (without naming them), then invite others to guess after watching the video.
3. Speem.watch Proof Video (20–60s, focus on sound)1.40 / 2.5A proof video is included (IPFS) and the author states the focus is sound. However, the audio is mainly visitor background noise during a walk-through, without highlighting a specific sound “moment” or layered soundscape. To improve: keep it 20–60 seconds, add 10–15 seconds standing still so the sound layers become clear, and optionally include a one-line spoken intro naming the exact spot.
4. Storytelling Quality1.90 / 2.5The post has a clear structure (entry → walkways → underground remains → tourist movement), and it connects to the author’s personal Geo-Quest journey and hometown identity. It would be stronger with a more “sound-first” narrative: loudest sound, smallest sound, repeating rhythm, and one surprising sound detail.
5. Engagement (Listening / Guessing others)1.0 / 1.0The participant actively engaged with other entries and commented by identifying the sounds heard, which aligns well with the Week 2 requirement of listening carefully and making sound guesses.

Final Score: 6.4 / 10

Remarks:
This is an authentic entry with strong location documentation and solid community interaction. The main improvements needed to score higher are: (1) deepen the soundscape description with multiple specific audio layers, (2) redesign the hidden challenge into three hidden sound clues, and (3) make the proof video more intentionally “sound-map” focused (still moment + clearer sound emphasis).

Hi dear @mahdisalim, I can understand Bengali but I didn't hear you telling the number of rooms or maybe I missed because too many people were speaking. My best guess is this Buddhist Temple which reminds me of a similar one in Saarnath in India has 125-150 rooms. Best of luck!

Dear brother, thank you very much for your comment. You will understand by looking at the pictures.

A nice presentation. I saw some half-open rooms in your post. The beauty of the Shalban Buddhist Monastery is a unique example of ancient history. I enjoyed your pictures and videos. I saw some noisy scenes in the video. There was a lot of people coming and going. The question was, how many rooms did I notice in the Shalban Buddhist Monastery? I estimate that there are about a hundred rooms here. Thank you very much, I wish you success in this competition.

The place is very beautiful and I went there for a picnic many years ago. However, I think it says the number of rooms there is 155.

Hi friend. I think there are 115 monastic rooms in that place.

Best regards.

You visited a beautiful public place called Shalban Bihar in Comilla. You enjoyed the natural beauty and the hustle and bustle of people there. You shared some important clips in the video, including people calling out to people, small children playing pranks on each other, and the sound of small vehicles moving a little away. In the background, I could clearly hear the call to prayer in the mosque, which was the most important sound. The place seemed cube-shaped to me, but the moment spent there was very interesting.

That's pretty cool to see that you have visited the shalban bihar of Cumilla. That's a traditional space to visit. Also there you have shared everything very well. Thanks for sharing Such a nice post.
