Junagarh Fort: A Royal Adventure for My Whole Family
Rajasthan state in India is synonymous with romance, heroism, and towering forts, but if you’re traveling with family—especially multi-generational groups—you need history that is captivating yet manageable. Look no further than Junagarh Fort in Bikaner.

Often called the Bikaner Fort, Junagarh offers a refreshingly accessible slice of Rajput history. It’s not built on a steep hill like Mehrangarh or Amber.

Instead, it rises directly from the Thar Desert plains, making it wonderfully easy on the knees and perfect for families pushing strollers or walking with grandparents.

History Comes Alive
The moment you stand before the massive, sandstone exterior walls, you understand why Junagarh remained unconquered for centuries.
The imposing scale is immediately fascinating for children, who instantly start imagining royal guards and hidden treasures.
But the real magic lies inside. While many desert forts are impressive shells, Junagarh is a meticulously preserved time capsule. Built in the 16th century, the fort’s interior architecture is a riot of color and detail.
As you walk through the numerous courtyards and palaces, you’re not looking at ruins—you’re stepping into the private spaces of the Rathore rulers.
My family particularly loved the Anup Mahal and the Chandra Mahal. The detailing—with intricate gold work, stunning lacquered paneling, and vibrant, colorful frescoes—kept our kids utterly absorbed.
It’s rare to find ancient sites so well-maintained that the original paint still pops. For history buffs, the display of antique weapons and royal artifacts in the museum wing provides endless talking points.

The Perfect Family Pace
What truly makes Junagarh ideal for families is the logistics. The guided tour is mandatory, which is actually a significant plus. Our guide was excellent at translating complex historical narratives into simple, engaging stories that held the attention of our youngest travelers.
Because the fort is relatively flat and the central courtyards offer ample breathing room, we could explore at a relaxed pace without the constant worry of steep climbs or treacherous steps.
We took our time admiring the famous "Mirror Palace" (Phool Mahal), which had everyone scrambling to spot themselves in the antique glass.
If you’re seeking a blend of cultural immersion, historical grandeur, and genuine family comfort, Junagarh Fort should top your Rajasthan itinerary. It’s an adventure that promises not just beautiful photos, but lasting royal memories.
