The Motive:
There are times where we cling to the comfortable, even to the dark places in our lives. There are times that some can feel attached to our problems, and perhaps not want to leave. It is often a problem with perception. For those of us struggling to let go of bad habits, whose self-esteem is affected by our continual failings, we might just need a change in perspective to show us how transformation can be a step around the corner.

The Technique:
The black rectangle is a perspective illusion that I painted onto the walls and faux column, visible in this photograph. It represents the dark place. Painting on the round and indented column while keeping the edge of the rectangle in perspective to the camera was the most difficult part. I used painters tape to ensure that the shape was correct before moving forward.

My favorite traits of this photograph: the model's feet aren't visible, but the end of her dress breaks the illusion giving depth and visual legibility. The shadows cast from the model and the column are just visible within the black paint on the wall.

This....this is incredible. My first reaction was to comment about how there was so much going on in the photo, and I was thinking about how it was clever of you to let her dress keep the continuity when you Photoshopped the two photos together...but then I read that this is one single frame and an illusion, and of course that makes everything better. It's so perfect!

Haha! Thank you! I always get a kick when people assume my work is Photoshopped. It makes me want to keep making increasingly more complex illusions and impossible-looking photographs. I've had friends mention that when they show their friends my work, their friends say, "Nice Photoshop!" and then they share the process shots that clearly display the reality of the work.

Yep, we've been conditioned to expect things to be Photoshopped these days. I enjoy PS and use it extensively but I know how much more satisfying it is to achieve the same effects with illusion and creative trickery like this. Keep up the great work! :D

Wow! Very insightful ideas behind the photo. I was thinking about how to achieve such an effect before I read the explanation. I could only think about a large rectangular filter (like an X-ray film) stuck on the pillar but the continuity of the dress would be broken. Very clever! U-F-R

Kudos. Great work done. I also want to enter into photography and modelling. Am sure i cam learn one or two from you.

I really like this image! It conveys the message very well but in a unique and creative way. The illusion works like a charm.
I also really like her pose. It flows really well with the rest of the picture.

Thank you, honored to be resteemed as well :D!

This awesome, this is artistic, i love it. Great photoshop skill you got

Hi Femi, no Photoshop in this photograph.

Okay, i'm guess she stood on something, maybe like a box, while you took her shot?

Nope! Her feet were on the ground, hidden behind the pillar!

Wow... Awesome.. Thumbs up

Such a cool idea and great execution! Nice work.

You've been resteemed by @photofeed!

Wow. Absolutely amazing. Like @derekkind I assumed this was cleverly photoshopped. Amazing!
