The prophecy in the Bible: If you return safely, it will mean that the LORD has not spoken through me! 2 Chronicles 18:27
There is a story in the Old Testament that demonstrates the power and nature of prophecy, the tale of the prophet Micah and King Ahab is a reminder that when a prophecy is true, everything done against it only strengthens the prophecy.
The Second Book of Chronicles tells the story of the kings of Judah from Solomon to Zedekiah. And among the most prominent kings of Judah after the death of Solomon was Jehoshaphat.
The Bible relates that Jehoshaphat was a sensible man who feared God, and that is why the Lord made him prosper and blessed him; but it happened that Ahab, the King of Israel, an ungodly and sinful man who had led the Kingdom of Samaria down the path of idolatry, called him and proposed to Jehoshaphat that they invade Ramoth-gilead together. The Bible relates that Jehoshaphat was a relative of Ahab, and because of family ties, he accepted the proposal, but he advised Ahab to consult the word of the Lord through the prophets before invading and waging war.
The Bible recounts that four hundred prophets were consulted by King Ahab and they foretold good fortune for the king in his actions, but it so happened that the prophet Micah arrived last, who, after a discussion, told the King that the prophets had been deceived because God wanted to tempt the King of Israel to commit a mistake, and thus punish him for his idolatry. As a result, King Ahab ordered the prophet imprisoned, to which Micah replied: "If you return safely, it will mean that the LORD has not spoken through me!" 2 Chronicles 18:27.
The Second Book of Chronicles ends the story by saying that the kings of Judah and Israel engaged in battle against the Kingdom of Aram, but Ahab, aware of Micah's prophecy, disguised himself, while Jehoshaphat kept his king's robes during the battle. Ahab's decision to hide from the enemy did not prevent him from being struck by an arrow launched randomly, and he died badly wounded some time later.
The universe has both a material and a spiritual order, and prophecies are a special reflection of this; this is what Ahab, in his pride, did not understand, and it cost him his life. The prophecy invites reflection and understanding that these are the same plan of God manifested to humanity.
