1. First Time Eating KFC

Today, while spending time with my baby, I purchased two portions of KFC’s New Orleans Wings. Observing my child enjoy the meal, I reflected on my own experiences.

Before finishing university, I had only tasted KFC on one occasion.

That happened during high school when my cousin married a woman from the county town. Her family dealt in real estate, placing them at a different social level than my cousin, but she treated us to a meal.

My brother selected a family bucket—it felt like a celebration for us. Although my brother and that cousin-in-law later parted ways, I remain grateful to her. She introduced me to KFC and revealed that such delightful food existed in the world.

My younger brother was present too; he even commented that it wasn’t tasty. My brother responded, “Tell us sooner, we’re still hungry.” In the 2010s, KFC was a rare luxury in our area. Back then, my brother and his wife were deeply affectionate, and she showed great concern for me and my brother, given our rural background.

At university, I still couldn’t afford KFC, but a more affordable option called Wallace was available. Once, at my ex-boyfriend’s residence, I ordered Wallace food worth 50 RMB. He remarked, “You sure know how to splurge, just don’t let my dad catch this.”

At that time, 50 RMB represented a significant sum for us.

We secretly consumed those Wallace burgers in the room. They were tasty, and every belch brought a sense of joy to my heart.

However, that incident highlighted that my ex and I weren’t compatible. He viewed 50 RMB as a fortune not to be wasted on such meals, while my taste buds understood the lifestyle I desired.

Eating KFC Again

Later, when I began working at a clothing store, the manager hailed from Anhui province. They adored noodles, but I found noodles unsatisfying and often unpleasant, occasionally even disgusting. Once, while eating shredded pork with pickled vegetables noodles, I discovered a fly in the vegetables. When I informed the plump auntie, she dismissed it, saying flies contain protein. I felt unhappy but still paid. 😭

On days I didn’t bring lunch, I would order the work meal. KFC offered work meal combos priced around 18 or 20 RMB, always including cola. I adored the New Orleans Wings but couldn’t justify ordering them separately. If they came in a combo, I’d indulge and savor the treat.

My salary then was 3500 RMB. After six months of work, I saved enough to buy a washing machine and TV for my family, earning praise from all the elders in my village. People believed I was thriving away from home.

But I labored intensely. I despised bus rides due to motion sickness. Commuting for morning and evening shifts on the bus left me feeling deeply depressed.

2. Entering Crypto and Saying Goodbye to KFC

In late 2015, I encountered my first boss by hailing his BMW via Didi. Didi had just entered the Nanjing market, with rides costing just over 2 RMB. Bus fares were also 2 RMB, but transfers totaled 4 RMB, so I naturally opted for Didi.

My boss perceived me as highly open to sharing. After attending an Amway session, I rode home in his car. He reasoned that since I embraced courses like Amway’s, I was receptive enough for crypto or financial pyramid schemes.

My boss operated financial pyramid schemes using crypto. Fresh out of university, I knew little. During his meetings, I diligently assisted his clients.

Once, for business reasons, he introduced us to #Bitcoin and #Ethereum for the first time. My interest sparked. Ethereum had fallen from over $20 to $3, leaving market users despondent, but it then surged past $800 (details hazy, might be slightly inaccurate). I initially used Yunbi exchange. I returned home and searched how to deposit and withdraw funds.

Regrettably, between late 2016 and 2017, I missed a 20 million RMB opportunity. Yunbi featured numerous coins like SC that surged a thousand-fold. I nearly ranked among the top 100 holders on the platform but sold out after some fluctuations.

Crypto awakened my greed. From then on, I scorned working for others and enrolled in a semi-pyramid scheme course costing about 80,000 RMB. How could someone earning 3500 RMB monthly afford that?

Loans, credit cards, and online lending became my primary funding sources. In subsequent years, I sank into a debt nightmare.

I borrowed 30,000 RMB and repaid over 50,000 RMB to Yirendai within a year. The memory remains vivid.

Later, the company promising post-course results collapsed, yet many like me were drained by it. Businesses failed, marriages ended, and young individuals like me lived burdened by debt.

During that course, I also met a scoundrel who deceived me into buying fake forex in 2017, causing me and friends to lose over 100,000 RMB.

By then, I no longer qualified to sit and enjoy KFC.

After completing my university internship and returning for graduation, I passed a KFC and swallowed hard. I mentioned in a small chat group with elders that I craved KFC and wanted to indulge.

One lady offered me 50 RMB to eat freely, but I declined.

3. The Days Without KFC Qualifications

Borrowed 80,000 to All In on #EOS

During my darkest, most indebted period, in the 2017 crypto bull market following the ‘94 incident’, many coins multiplied hundreds to thousands of times. My EOS holdings on an exchange yielded a 10x profit, totaling tens of thousands. This opened my eyes.

Borrowing Money Revealed People’s True Colors

Everyone complimented me, saying I had potential and worked diligently. But when I requested a loan, a gentle lady abruptly turned fierce like a tiger. She claimed she was at a KTV and couldn’t hear me, had no funds to lend, and told me to seek others. She previously expressed pity and considered giving me 5,000 RMB. This sudden shift left me speechless.

Decided to Borrow 80,000 Online

I found a young guy online eager to lend me money, taking a high interest cut.

Fortunately, a senior Chinese ICP investor and ambassador I call “Senior Brother” existed. After meeting me once in Nanjing, he provided 50,000 RMB and advised against further borrowing.

He originated from Shandong. I still recall his kindness. But I remained impoverished. The ICP private sale I joined with him didn’t issue tokens for years during the bear market. Eventually, my senior brother depleted his funds and demanded repayment. At that time, I was likely pregnant and drowning in debt, unable to repay. I genuinely felt remorse.
