The exchange of crypto-coins based in Tokyo Coincheck has confirmed that it has suffered what appears to be the biggest hack in history.

At a press conference held shortly, the company's president and chief operating officer confirmed that about 500 million tokens from NEM, equivalent to about $ 1.6 billion were withdrawn from Coincheck's digital portfolios on Friday , according to Japanese media Asahi.

According to Coindesk, so far, the exact number of the stolen quantity will only be confirmed after further checks are carried out.

Coincheck is seeing ways to compensate its customers, its executives announced.

The amount of dollars stolen from Coincheck is likely to be greater than the amount stolen from Mt. Gox in 2014, although the impact on the crypto-coins market is much smaller.

Rumors had circulated about the robbery since early this morning when Coincheck abruptly froze most of its services.

The company announced on its website that it had restricted deposits, negotiation and withdrawal of XEM, the token that runs on the NCH blockchain.

A wider suspension on the looting of all Crypto-Coins as well as Japanese Yen was announced about 30 minutes later. In the next hour, the negotiation of all the criptomoedas was also restricted, except the bitcoin. According to the latest update, other deposit methods, including credit cards, have also been discontinued.

It was also revealed that Coincheck was not registered with the Financial Services Agency of Japan, but now plans to register. The president of Coincheck said that he "deeply regretted" what had happened.
