Why can't the price of Steem stand on it's own merits? In other words, why should a platform as unique as Steemit depend on the price of Bitcoin! Is it because Steemit has issues that nobody is talking about?

I don't know of many places where you can buy Steem with USD. Until that is true, the price will highly correlate to the other crypto such as Bitcoin
