Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?

Mystery man

Although we may not know who he (or she) was, we know what he did. Satoshi Nakamoto was the inventor of the bitcoin protocol, publishing a document via the cryptographic mailing list in November 2008.

He then released the first version of the client bitcoin software in 2009 and participated with others in the project through mailing lists, until finally began to disappear from the community by the end of 2010.

Nakamoto worked with people from the open source team, but he was careful not to reveal anything personal about himself, and the last person to hear about him was in the spring of 2011, when he said he had "gone on to other things."

But he was Japanese, right?

Better not judge a book by its cover. Or indeed, maybe we should.

"Satoshi" means "clear thinking, quick intelligent". "Naka" can mean "middle, inside or relationship". "Moto" can mean "origin," or "foundation."

All those things apply to the person who founded a movement by designing an intelligent algorithm. The problem, of course, is that every word has multiple possible meanings.

We can not know for sure whether he was Japanese or not. In fact, it is rather presumptuous to assume that he was really a "he".

We are only using that as a figure of speech, but given the fact that this could have been a pseudonym, "he" could have been a "she", or even a "them."
