Bitcoin fork explained in layman's terms

Being fairly new to cryptocurrency technology and trading I don’t quite grasp all the terminology and their definition.

With the fork looming I went in search of what that will mean for those of us involved with crypto.

I know some wallets are halting any transactions from being made on July 31, 2017.
