CNN published the sentence this corridor has been waiting for — and the bill that follows it.
Work to rebuild trade routes destroyed by catastrophic flooding in Nepal has begun, with a new bridge across the Tadi River that the Nepali Army is calling the “bridge of hope.”
Nepal will need a lot of it, as the country starts digging itself out of a disaster-related economic crisis that government officials estimate will cost at least $5 billion in reconstruction receipts alone.
That is the Tadi crossing at Devighat — the Acrow / temporary span this series recorded as open on Thursday and Friday. The Army’s name for it is now in international copy. The hope is real: trucks and LPG can move again on a stretch that had been air-only. The sentence after it is the story.

What Kathmandu actually said on Friday
The round “at least $5 billion” is the political number Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle gave Reuters weeks ago — about a tenth of annual output. On Friday the Foreign Ministry put a sharper figure on the table.
Spokesman Lok Bahadur Chhetri:
- $4.78 billion total reconstruction
- $57.67 million for the next six months
- $4.71 billion for the long rebuild
NDRRMA chief Dharam Raj Uprety ran a parallel sheet in rupees: about Rs 723 billion, or $4.74 billion, built from ministries and local bodies. Infrastructure is 75 percent of that — roads, hydropower, solar. Energy damage in the same briefing: 13 hydropower plants, 759 MW, plus five solar plants, 24 MW. The Prime Minister’s Office listed 69 km of road and 33 motorable bridges gone, four more damaged, 53 of 64 suspension bridges hit.
Those three numbers — CNN’s “at least $5 billion,” Chhetri’s $4.78 billion, Uprety’s $4.74 billion — are the same mountain seen from three offices. None of them is a cheque.

Chitwan 364, Nawalparasi East 228, West 222, Nuwakot 199, Rasuwa 185, Gorkha 77, Dhading 70, Tanahun 38, plus two hospital deaths in Kathmandu.
No new live tunnel rescue. Chilime, Trishuli-3A and 3B are still the holes. About 121 hydropower workers were still thought to be underground at the start of the week.
A $20 million climate fund against a $4.78 billion hole
CNN’s longer cut, carried on U.S. affiliates, is blunt: rich countries are handing Nepal a climate bill it cannot pay. Nepal emits about 0.1 percent of global carbon. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said he will “strongly raise” climate disasters with the world. Nepal has invoked the UN Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage emergency track — the first country to do so. The cap for one disaster is about $20 million. That is less than half of one percent of Chhetri’s reconstruction line.
A UN preliminary note put building damage alone at $158 million and warned roads, farms and humanitarian costs would dwarf it. NDRRMA’s earlier property sheet was Rs 387.5 billion / $2.56 billion. The Department of Roads still talks Rs 30 billion damage and Rs 50 billion to rebuild highways properly. Insurance claims already exceed the 2015 earthquake book.
The Devighat span is a Bailey / Acrow fix. It is not 33 motorable bridges. It is not 759 megawatts. It is one river crossed so the next convoy can start.
