Introducing The First Ever GPS For The Shipping Container Industry
It is a well-known fact that fossil fuels are the #1 source of CO2 emission in the atmosphere because it is used as the primary source of producing energy all over the world. Next, to fossil fuels, carbon emissions from vehicles also affects the environment as more than 1 billion tons of CO2 are released from the automobiles. Sharing the ride with friends, colleagues or using ride-sharing services like Uber will not only reduce the number of vehicles on the road but also will reduce the CO2 emissions. Making use of public transportation is also a good option to save fuel and environment.
Besides passenger vehicles, freight containers also contribute to the global warming as they are used for transportation of goods within a country or across borders. Obviously, you cannot think about the ride for shipping containers. But, it is possible to optimize the space available in the freight containers by dumping to its maximum capacity. For that, there needs to be an IT system which can store the various fields like the capacity of the container, current load, targeted destination, current location, expected arrival time etc. However, the IT systems and processes in the shipping industry had become so outdated that you cannot get information about the containers in real-time.
In addition to that, the shipping industry faces a lot of challenges like security threats, failing to comply with new environmental regulations, overcapacity etc. Even though the annual revenue of the shipping container industry is more than 12 trillion USD, still it is lagging behind the other industries concerning technology. Blockshipping, a company headquartered in Denmark is planning to utilize the blockchain technology for solving the issues in the shipping industry. As a first step, it will be developing a platform named GSCP (Global Shipping Container Platform) which will keep track of the real-time information about all the freight containers in the world (more than 25 million) by storing them in the blockchain based registry. In this way, GSCP will be able to meet the demands of the various players of the shipping container industry like transport companies, ports, terminals, carriers and more.
As the platform is based on the blockchain technology, the transactions will be made using cryptocurrency based tokens to activate the smart contracts. So, Blockshipping will be issuing two types of tokens named CPT and CCC for the development of the GSCP platform. CPT (Container Platform Token) is the internal utility token which will be used for clearing settlements/payments between the users of the platform. CCC (Container Crypto Coin) will function as the external revenue share token. Those who own the CCC tokens will get a percentage of the revenue of the GSCP platform as a reward for their valuable contribution.
GSCP platform will provide two significant benefits which are given below:
- Reduce the global carbon mission by at least 4 million tons every year.
- Help the global shipping industry to reduce their operation cost by saving at least 5 billion USD every year.
