Did you know that the Steem block-chain is stored in a nuclear bomb proof bunker?

in #blockchain8 years ago

As a backup witness, I am very curious who the top 19 witnesses are and what they are up to. I was particularly interested in one user because at a glance it did not seem like they were doing much as a witness. The user is @datasecuritynode. They basically created a witness post about 7 months ago, and other than that, have only left a few upvotes and comments. My first reaction was "Hey, this dude has got to go! Make room for me :)".

I dug into it a bit more and found out some basic info. According to Steemstory.com, @datasecuritynode was the 629 user to singup. That's almost as early as Dan and Ned! This person has really been around since the beginning. They are also starting to become a fairly active curator. They have made 329 upvotes, but I've noticed that a lot of it has been happening recently. That alone is obviously not enough to hold a top 19 witness position though.

Then I found out why. What I found most interesting about this user is how they are running their witness node. According to their witness post, and datasecuritynode.com website - "It will be secured in an underground nuclear bunker protected against all forms of man-made and natural disasters."

If you think about it, that's actually pretty cool!

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about Steemit, and I told him that whatever is posted on the blockchain is stored "forever". "Forever?" he said. (He is a lawyer and so he likes to question the meaning of specific words.) It was pretty fun to be able to tell him how permanent the blockchain really is. As long as there is a node to run the blockchain, the data will always be there. Even in the event that we blow ourselves up and nothing of humanity is left - our Steem block-chain will still be sitting there in a bunker somewhere - waiting for some future civilization that colonizes the planet to dig it up :)

this is quite fascinating! I was also very curious about datasecuritynode since he remains mysterious! I like to vote for those I know or at least post. You'll get there! Maybe I should advertise my writing is now for sale for witnesses, now that I'm looking for new clients....when the well runs dry, I gotta hustle again. I took on one client already but that only pays me $200 per month. I'm back to the grind of figuring out how to pay for bills. Unlike others, I never powered down, and instead, I powered up a ton. I regret that decision now. I'm back to scrambling for everything. I learned my lesson though. Never trust a bubble. I began powering down when steem was around $.60, but now that it's around $.13, I can no longer support my family on it alone. I am a sucker i guess........

Well it was a bubble for sure. I think most people should have seen that (for example) making $44,000 on one blog post was not something that could be sustained long-term. I did still buy in some myself pretty much at the top though, and even to this day I do not regret the decision. I think what a lot of people are just starting to find out is that the July push was not the "product launch" but was mainly intended to raise a bunch of money so they could hire people and build out the infrastructure of the site and related projects. Eventually when the site is ready to go mainstream I still believe it will be STEEM to the moon! :)

I definitely would not consider you (or myself) a sucker though. We both saw the value this platform had to offer and considered it a good investment. We also assumed others would see the same, and the price would keep going up.

I can no longer support my family on it alone

It is really too bad. There were a lot of users that I saw were planning to use Steemit as a full-time income, and I really questioned it. The marketcap of STEEM is not that much yet, and we cannot afford to pay hundreds of people $30,000 to write about what their cats and hamsters are up to. You were one of the people that was really adding a lot of value to the platform though, so I always thought of you as one of our "full time employee" bloggers. I hope we get back to the point where you can be one again.

Well, I am a writer. I write every day, so I'll be writing on perhaps different platforms, along with this. I'm looking for a decentralized home actually.

Even in the event that we blow ourselves up and nothing of humanity is left - our Steem block-chain will still be sitting there in a bunker somewhere - waiting for some future civilization that colonizes the planet to dig it up :)

Hey aliens!

still not even sure what a witness is/does? could you enlighten me? :)

Sure, happy to. I'm copy/pasting info that I had used in another post on witnesses :) Let me know if you have further questions, and I'm happy to answer!

  • The primary duty of a witness is to produce and sign blocks for the Steem blockchain. This is the way that everything happening in Steemit gets accurately recorded and tracked on the database that is distributed across all the Steem nodes.
  • Witnesses are also elected leaders of the community. They have a responsibility to grow the Steem/Steemit community by using their skills/talents (as well as witness funds) in ways that benefit the community.
  • They are the final deciders as to whether or not hard-forks occur. If there are controversial or bad changes being proposed, the witnesses can put a stop to them by refusing to pick up the new version.
  • They also publish the price of Steem, which is used to determine the payout of SBD->Steem conversions, as well as the Steem marketcap - which determines the total amount of rewards available in the reward pool.

WOW, that is actually pretty impressive!
I'm still leaning toward community oriented and engaged witnesses - partly because it's my comfort zone as I don't know shit about the dev or economic side of Steemit. I am trying to learn though.

I wondered if steemit wold survive a solar flare should the world be toasted.

And how did this user get into bomb shelter and i can i visit?

I would assume so. They have some additional info on their website. The user also hangs out in Steemit.chat, but I don't know how often he/she replies to messages. You could try asking for a tour :)

So in a way Steem is a time capsule of a part of our civilization. Thankfully we don't have be wiped out as those of us that use Steem are generally much better at logical thinking than the rest of the population could be at the forefront at helping civilization forward

Timcliff, what number witness are you now?

lol, I started by just typing 67. Good old markdown translated that into #1. I had to edit it to "67." :)

"67". Working my way up :)
