What is music???

Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organised in time. It is also used to express ideas and emotions in significant sound forms by using the elements of rhythm, melody and harmony through voices, instruments or both.

Music adds colour to my day. It brings about a sense of tranquility in the surroundings depending of course on the types of music being played. For most people, music has been a means of entertainment. Various shows have been created to increase the popularity of songs. But we cannot deny the fact that they have also given the opportunity to some talented artists to make music their career prospects.

In my country, Mauritius " The Vibe" is a show sponsored by MCB- The Mauritius Commercial Bank in which people who likes singing participate to express their talents. It is a competition to uncover potential singers and to promote singing as a career prospect as well. This show can motivate teenagers to choose music over drugs or other criminal activities detrimental to themselves and their families. It gives scopes and hopes to poor people to achieve a better social status and to earn a better and decent living.

Mauritius is a multicultural country following local music. This in fact adds to the beauty of my country. The sega represents the historical aspects of my country. It is a dance which originated from the ritual music of Madagascar and the mainland of Africa, and it is the Musical Expression of the Mauritian way of life: joy and liveliness.

Originally sung by men and women who had been sold as slaves but whose sails had remained sensitive to music, the sega is nowadays a folk-songs which has integrated itself within the framework of our folklore. The sega is usually sung in Creole ( mother tongue of Mauritius). The oriental instruments are fast disappearing, making way for the more conventional orchestra ensemble. However, all along the coastal fishing villages, "Triangle", the "Maravanne" and the traditional guitar are still being used.

Music is of course a means to earn money and becomes a celebrity. But it is also a way to improve life. The famous Mauritian Singer Kevin Din, alias Sky to be is an undeniable example of music being a path towards positivity. Born in Roche Bois, he got more than 200,000 likes on YouTube with his improvised songs. In 2018, his biggest dream is finally realized : the creation of his very first album, "Circonstances la vie". This album represents new begging for him. It acts as a change of life and attitude towards betterment.

This album relates his life, his truths as well as his mistakes. It is an autobiography in songs of course to show to the public that the ancient Sky to be is now changed. It is for his son that he decided to change and made efforts to improve his life style. He wants his songs to be proud of him. He always wanted to make a living out of music and he succeeded. He is now very popular local singer.

Therefore, music is pure in the sens that it conveys pains, joys, emotions in all it form. It avoids war and instills peace in each and every soul. Music is the path towards righteousness. It is a land of victory of light over evil. Lets move music a way to join people and destroys classicism and racism. The world would be a better and beautiful place to live.
