The Sad Phenomena of Tabloid Steeming

in #blog7 years ago

I have recently counted OVER 20 blogs written by someone over a 3-7 hour period. That's right over 20. Over 5 in one hour at one point.

I have noticed with this type of "blogging" there is a lot of misinformation presented. I work full time as a physical therapist. Upon three DIFFERENT occasions I have found this individual posting blogs that either have no source, have a source but he/she directly contradicted it, or is written in a very misleading way. These blogs all have to do with health. One in particular could be lethal to a diabetic if followed.

I typically enjoy writing well thought out blogs 1-3 times a DAY. I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity. Unfortunately, and i can say this as a new steemer myself, many people on here are mass producing blurbs of "information" with or without sources. The mass production is a problem. There's no way you could put out, say 5 written blogs in an hour and expect quality.

  • Instead, you get blatant misinformation because the individual rushed to get this blog
    written.
  • you see multiple grammatical errors or sentences poorly constructed that make no sense
  • you see articles with potentially dangerous info put out with no reference

Please, please, please steeemers..... if you're going to write a blog about health TAKE your time. Not everyone here works in healthcare or would even know the info was incorrect. Same goes for all topics.

This is a phenomenon I call "tabloid" steeming. I have seen it from a few people. It's a gold digging phenomena. I feel it also buries quality content.

You'll make more money and establish more meaningful connections if you take your time with blogging.

Mass production of poorly written blogs can't be fun! We are supposed to be having fun here!!!

There's a lot of "you won't believe" content around the web that is obviously clickbait. Even some reputable sites are including links to these (shame on you Guardian). Steemit is bound to attract those after a quick buck and I hope the community will choose to vote for quality.

True. I think for the MOST part our community is voting for and encouraging quality

Agreed 100%!

I can't stand "tabloid content," and there's a greater issue there in that it tends to clog people's feeds, and when a potential new member considers Steemit for the first time, they may be turned off by all the garbage... as a result of which the entire community could suffer, in the long run. I suppose the best thing we can do is simply not interact with such content... making it unprofitable for the "spammer" to be here.

That's probably the best. I just can't help commenting (not upvoting) when I'm seeing info that someone might actually try and damage their health

I've wondered how many are using ghostwriters to create content. That could be why some of these people are posting so much content within an hour's time. I write quickly, but most of the time, I can't write fast enough to post 5 posts in an hour. Not even short ones if I wanted them to look nice. I'm a newbie too, but I know the ghostwriting community and some of what I'm seeing screams low-paid ghostwriting to me. There's plenty of places to find people willing to write it, even for pennies. Even some of the newspapers and more well known websites are using them now.

I've been culling my blog, so I have posts I already spent a lot of time on, but hardly anyone ever read them. Hey, I find them fascinating, or funny, or I wouldn't have written them. :-) so far, the wider world of steemit is like my friends and family... "Why on Earth is she so excited about THIS?"

I'm following you. I will check out your blogs and see if I have any tips. It takes some time. Of course you know that. Keep steeming the good content and be your unique self

@smuggly-sparrow Well I'm not going to point out the specific individual that stood out the most but as i said i counted 22 blogs in a 7 hr period. I stopped counting, there were more. To add to the mis info, many were poorly constructed grammatically and this isn't the only steem account ive seen like this just the most extreme case. Yep, could be ghostwriters. I'm not up to speed on how all that works. But on these 22 blogs i don't recall seeing ONE that had amassed over like a few cents. ...

Yeah, they're either sitting around on a porta-potty writing nonstop, with a g-tube, or they're buying content. Not cool at all. This isn't meant to be that kind of site, and I don't want to see it here, whether of a tabloid nature or not.

You're definitely right and I'm sad about the lack of quality in many of the Steemit posts. I just hope that one day, these people see that it doesn't pay to post crap and they'll stop. Maybe they'll get tired of the low payouts they are (hopefully) receiving.

I typically just scroll by it in disgust but when they ate putting stuff that could potentially be TRIED by a shall we say ill informed person and put their health at risk i just comment the correction but don't upvote it. I would hope most would do follow up reading before following one piece of advice but working in healthcare you'd be surprised

Yeah, many people will believe anything they read on the internet. It's a good thing you comment on such a post to warn people!

Thanks lol. I would link one but i don't want to call the person out but it truly was something that could fuck with a diabetic

So true! I really enjoy your writing and of course am following you now. If you have minute and can take a look at my writing, comment what you like and suggestions for improvement. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for the compliment and follow. I will take a look at your content. :)

Totally on point @chelsea88.

The absolute key to Steem is "adding value with every interaction." It's as simple as that. Sure, it's hard to always add value, but the amazing thing about Steem is that we're all building a super valuable commons together. Garbage In, Garbage Out. Amazing Quality In, Fantastic Experience Out. :) #AQIFEO

Stoked to see you putting such excellent ideas into the Steemiverse!

Adding value with every interaction - right on! Thank you for reading. I'm going to follow you and look forward to future and current content from you. Have a great day.

Pysched for the follow, thank you! I'm putting out a "How to Steemit" post tomorrow that I think you'll really dig. Would you like me to tag you in it?

Absolutely. Your name paleo treats alone has me interested bc i love fitness and try to eat right.
That sounds like a helpful post. Yes please tag me in it. Thank you! !

Done, just posted here. Rock on!

I'm amazed at some of the posts that are racking up the money. It's like the books on the NYT best-seller lists. Shaking my head, wondering how some stuff sells and so much good stuff goes ignored....

All about amassing steem pwr and good repoir

Thanks for sharing. You are correct especially regarding health information. I hope our sensibilities will be the best censor. No value - no vote!!

Precisely. Sounds like we are on the same wavelength. For that I'm following ya :D

Aww that is so kind. I just perused your blog and followed you. I will read later and curate. Still working out what I will be famous for. :)

Just speak from the heart

I hope Steemit doesn't become like a lot of the Internet, full of lazy and sensational posts about health. It's one area where being correct really does matter. I post about @foraging and all the health misinformation is one reason I focus on foraging for food and crafts, not for health. Foraging is one of the areas where misinformation can have bad consequences, too. Here's to your health - and quality health posts here on Steemit!

I don't think it will bevause a lot of people here are savvy enough to see it. But there are some who aren't and that's why tabloid steeming is bad. Misinformation is just bad news all around

I hear you! I joined Steemit hoping to avoid all of that nonsense. It seems some sneaked in anyway. I guess it is inevitable anytime money is brought into the equation. All we can do is report the truly bad ones, and hope the rest fade out when their bull horn tactics don't get the response they had hoped.

I don't necessarily mind high volume. Its when the quality is SO POOR and also WRONG that is a real problem
eye roll
It also makes you look bad so i don't understand the motivation

I don't think there is any actual motivation other than hoping that if they spam enough click bait they are bound to pull in a little bit of money anyway. Then they move on to the next thing.

But it's like you said, people who have no real idea about a subject can do major harm simply by either repeating misinformation or outright making things up to get attention.

That's why I think you should really only post about things you know SOMETHING about or are passionate about it in some way. After all steemit is supposed to be fun.
