She prepared herself for the inevitable.
She opened her eyes after that umteenth alarm howled in her ears.
'Why did I have to drink so much. Ugh!'
She looked at her phone. Battery dead. But the alarm had 'just' beeped. She was confused.
She picked up her wrist watch from the side table. 15 minutes were left before she HAD TO get up. She went under the covers, being proud of herself.
'Its just 9.15.' She smiled 'or was it...Oh! No no no no no' she panicked.
'Please God, let it be 9.15, let it be 9.15.' she was too scared to look at her watch again. She cursed her sister for buying her a fancy watch with no numbers on it. She rotated the watch twice in her hands and finally saw it. 2:45! Damn!
She threw herself out of the bed. She had a throbbing headache. She ran to the washroom, sat to finish off the morning job...but oh no! her stomach was in a mood today.
She changed her bottoms. Put toothbrush in her mouth,
'why is it smelling like odomos?'
'because it IS odomos, you idiot!' She patted herself for filling up her mouth with the mosquito repellent right in the morning. Mosquitoes, she knows not about but she hopes this will keep that stupid boss of hers off her back. 'Such cl..cl.. what was that word that starts with c, specially designed by oxford dictionary for people like me. Cl...it is right there on the tip of my tongue. Forget it, people call me clumsy for a reason.'
Her boss was going to blast today. She slipped into her favourite shirt. 'Why does it smell like somebody vomitted on it?'
'Oh no! What else did I do yesterday.'
She quickly changed into the only shirt left in her wardrobe, she looked towards her laundry bag. 'Someday I'll clean you up till the last cloth, baby.'
She picked up her essentials; bag check, laptop check, wallet check, dead phone check.
She closed the door and ran towards the lift. 'Oh no!' She forgot the keys. 'OH NO!' she forgot the keys to her apartment as well. Now, she'll have to beg before the watchman to open the door, again.
She ran downstairs, caught an autorickshaw and for the first time since morning, sat quietly wondering about the events that took place since yesterday.
She split up with Viraj, she had too much to drink, rest of the night was too blurry, she remembers Ronit came to pick her up. She thought about Ronit. Yeah! He might have her keys. That would spare her the effort of begging before the watchman.
Lost in her thoughts, she missed her turn.
'To whose face did I wake up today!' Irritated, she reached her office, swiped her ID card, flashing in bold red letters "access denied". Must be a mistake. She did it again. "Access denied."
She prepared herself for the inevitable. She could see "fired" written in block letters on her face.
She took her bag and went to the nearby cafeteria. Opened up her laptop and started to play solitaire, sipping her cold hot coffee. This day could not get any better.
She packed her bag, started roaming on the streets, aimlessly. She reached marine drive, went to her favourite spot, a couple was already sitting there, hands in hands. Too exhausted to be irritated, she went to the Nariman point, sat there, opened her laptop. MS word. She was in a mood to write today. As she was into the story, somebody tapped on her shoulder. Ronit was standing there, 6 feet tall, all handsome with the most proportionate body, adorning a cocky smile, wearing a tight black t-shirt and "potty" coloured pants. She always used to tease him for those pants but she had to accept that he was one of those guys who could totally pull them off. Why is she not attracted to him. She always wondered. He sat beside her.
"So, you forgot to plug in the charger or you did plug it in but you forgot to switch the power on?" He said playfully.
"The latter," She said while keep her head down, looking at her hands.
"Haha! Then, I win a bet against myself. Well guessed, Ronit," He gave himself a pat on the back. Well, he tried to.
She rolled her eyes at him. They sat there quietly for about 10 minutes looking
