Talking about water survival
Starting with the knowledge that it has become important to collect rainwater isn't necessarily the best approach.However, that's how this project ended up working out.
So maybe I should just focus on the actual installation.
It took some time to gather all the things I needed to make this project possible.
As an average person trying to do this DIY project, common sense told me I needed to figure out the difference between knowing what needs to be done and knowing what I can physically do.
Only then could I research the parts I didn't understand.
The first thing I focused on was installing a gutter on a roof that measures 16 by 7 meters.
So that's 112 square meters of roof to capture.The roof is made of corrugated iron and I chose galvanised 100 mm square gutters.Mainly because they are cost-effective, and secondly because this roof didn't have any gutters and only needed one gutter at the lower side.Thirdly, the only way to attach the gutter was directly to the square corrugated metal roof itself.The plastic options require facia boards close to the edge, which wasn't possible here.
The building is at the back of the property and the roof slopes away towards the property boundary.
The property behind me — well, let's just say that their back fence meets my back fence.
One thing I didn't realize when installing the gutter was that water always flows downhill, even if the slope is very slight.
So the gutter has to slope towards the rainwater collection area, otherwise you'd need to collect water on both sides of the building, which would mean double the water tanks and double the cost.
Another reason I chose galvanised gutters is that they allow for stays or connectors that can be attached across the top of the gutter, which helps make the whole system sturdier.
I also found that I was able to get the water to flow in one direction towards the downpipe.Not sure if I was just lucky with that, but I'll take it.
Two more things I learned while doing the project, which probably make sense or are logical: When the gutter lengths meet, the next length needs to be under the first one.
In other words, if the water flows from left to right in the gutter, the joints or lengths should be placed on top of the lengths to the right.
The other thing is that using a lot of silicone at the joints is recommended.
So the gutter was installed, and I added a gutter stop end on one end.
On the other end, it's sticking out past the building because that's where I'm going to put the collection tanks.
You'll see from the picture that I have a steel cable grid that's been rawl bolted in place.
It used to have a vine growing on it, but unfortunately, we don't even know what kind of vine it was because it was dead when we bought the property.But the cable grid has to come down in order to put the tanks up.
