Single Player Missions:
To get yourself familiar with the gameplay, maps, characters and different abilities each character has, playing these single player missions is good practice before you try your luck online. Each mission you play as a different character in the game, on a different map each time. You learn how to use these specific characters to your advantage and earn a star rating at the end of each mission. I definitely recommend giving this a play before you hop online. It's good practice.
Online Gameplay:
Anyone will tell you that this game is pretty much strictly online gameplay. While you can play the characters you played as in the single player missions, you also have the opportunity to gain points to buy other characters with other unique abilities. These abilities ranging from boobie traps, shields, special weapons like snipers or grenade launchers, the ability to see an enemies heart rate through walls, and so on. Each team is split up, one on offense protecting the bomb or hostage inside of the building and the other on defense making their way into the building to capture the hostage or disarm the bomb. It's a 5 versus 5 match and you can choose to play casual with the beginners, or Ranked with the professionals. When playing a ranked match, at the end whether you lose or win, your personal rank goes up or down. It keeps things interesting.
While there are plenty of games that you can play online, I believe this is the best one by far. It's taken the place of Call Of Duty, in my opinion. This game is a lot more tricky and a lot more tactical. While a lot of online games are fast paced, this one is a bit more realistic. It gets you thinking a little more than usual when shooting up people online. I'm not one for online gameplay, I don't find it that amusing. But I could play this game online all day long. I highly recommend you give it a play!
