How? well, the weapon must be biological smart, hard to kill, probably airborne because of it easy to spread and cover the whole large area. Like The Mist. It requires a lot of power to make a big Mist. If someone inside that cloud of mist, it will mess their head and seeing things or hallucinating.

But, there's a problem. When they trying to power the machine that makes The Mist, It needs a lot of juice to produce it. They overestimate the calculation that supposed to be the exact amount to make the weapon running smoothly. NZT users will have no glitch or error in any way but yet again the fourth dimension isn't easy to understand how it works.

They accidentally Open another portal to our world. It's funny how things work perfectly without our knowledge. The Mist is actually a gas that similar to the other dimension. It's an oxygen, co2 with 4% or 5% like our atmosphere and some kind like N2O gas or to be exact a new gas element that we never uncovered yet, combined with microscopic life forms. The gruesome part is when they inhale the air around them in that mist, they inhale micro-organism parasite inside their body and began to evolve from larva to fully complete form, eat their way out and began the life circle.

In our understanding of a vast universe, there's a lot of planets that we've uncovered yet. It probably linking to another planet full of alien life forms. A new element that human can't coop within our body. It is the same thing if we inhale other dangerous or poisonous gas, our body will stop moving or it somehow giving us a bad chemical reaction to our cells mix with the gas and end up with death.
