This is CP/M, an operating system that predates Microsoft DOS by several years. Looking at its command-line interface, it already feels surprisingly familiar: commands such as DIR, COPY, TYPE, and FORMAT later became standard parts of the DOS world. CP/M was developed by Digital Research in the 1970s and became one of the dominant operating systems for early microcomputers before the IBM PC era.
When IBM launched its PC in 1981, Microsoft supplied MS-DOS, whose early design and command conventions were heavily influenced by the CP/M ecosystem. In many ways, looking at a CP/M screen today feels like looking at an ancestor of DOS —and, indirectly, a small piece of the family tree that eventually led to modern Windows.
CP/M originally stood for Control Program/Monitor. Later, Digital Research also used the expansion Control Program for Microcomputers.
It was created by Gary Kildall in the 1970s and became one of the most important operating systems for 8-bit microcomputers before DOS.
