If you turn on Optimise Storage, your device may remove full-resolution originals from local storage and keep smaller, optimized versions instead, downloading the originals from iCloud only when you view or edit them.

This process saves local storage without deleting your photos, as the full-quality files remain safely stored in iCloud. Simply turning on iCloud Photos doesn’t automatically free space—the storage savings happen specifically when Optimise Storage is enabled and your device needs room.
