The L word: The first lesbian series (and a gay transmen) + Spoiler

in #blog6 years ago

I remember the first time I saw the series, I thought: I'm not alone, there's a community out there, in 2006. I was 15 years old, I knew I liked girls but I did not know I was a transgender man.

The L word is the first series whose theme was focused on a group of lesbians. There were 8 characters.

 Main Characters

Bette Porter: One of the main characters, Tina Kennard's partner and authority on art matters. Performed by Jennifer Beals, who was the protagonist of the classic "Flashdance".

Tina Kennard: Bette's partner and the one who carried the pregnancy of the relationship, giving birth to a girl. While the relationship with Bette lasted, he decided to take care of the housework.

Shane Mccutcheon: The most androgynous girl in the series, I did not believe in love and the girls melted for her and some of us wanted to be like her.

Alice Pieszecki: She identified herself as bisexual, the fun of the group and creator of "The Chart", a theory that we are all united by the sexual relationships we have had and create a network with each other.

Dana Fairbanks: Lesbian tennis player, spent a lot of time in the closet, died due to breast cancer

Jenny Shecter: It is one of the first characters that appears, holding a heterosexual relationship, and then begins to maintain a homosexual relationship and thus enters the group of lesbian girls. Keep a diary that comes alive in the series.

Kit Porter: Sister of Bette, heterosexual and who had a brief relationship with a dragking. She is the manager of The Planet, a bar where a large part of the series takes place.

Max Sweeney: Transsexual man of the series, was introduced to the group of lesbian friends when he was a couple of Jenny Shecter, then had male partners, left pregnant and suffered medical discrimination in the course of pregnancy

To be honest when I met the character of Max I did not feel identified, but it was my first approach to the transsexual theme and the lesbian theme as well. But the most incredible thing for me was that there was a series on those topics that were still taboo and that I talked about them with such freedom and on a public schedule.
This series, among others of the time, opened the doors to dozens of characters, stories and dramas about sexual diversity of television and cinema today. So let's thank him.
