Ø5: The Inter-not & Running When You Don't Feel Like It

Writing a Post-Apoc Novel with a Post-Apoc view.

We have no intenet!

As in nothing.

Nada.

The broadband isn't coming until the 20th and I've used up my tethering allowance.

Not to worry. It's actually been pretty great for my productivity. I got 2000 words of the book done before getting to work. I love the feeling of finishing the real work before arriving at the office. Nothing gives me a bigger skip in my step.

Can you imagine a world without internet?

I can. I'm 60,000 words into writing a novel about it.

When I got home last night I was light-headed and woozy and running was the last thing I wanted to do. All I wanted at that moment was food and a comfy groove to nestle into and zone out to The Great British Bake-Off.

But!

I have a compass point, remember?

I want to run a 10k race before the year is out.

So I slovenly slipped into my running gear and rolled myself out the door and got in a couple of miles. I wasn't feeling it. The whole way I was wishing it was over. I was wishing it was done. So I was nicely surprised to find that it was one of my fastest times yet.

Interesting to see how improvement can sneak up on you like that.

Creepy creep improvements.

What I'm reading

Nobody Wants To Read Your Shit by Steven Pressfield.

No quotes today but I'm enjoying the truth bombs about the art of storytelling. All basic stuff, but the kind of stuff that you can easily forget.

IDEA 107: Struggling today.

But I’m thinking back to when I was a kid and I got my Playstation console chipped. Which just means that it allows you to play pirated games. I remember feeling so dirty when I did that. Like, I was ruining something that was so well designed and well put together.

So ...

What if you have some kid who gets his Playstation or whatever console ‘chipped’ and it opens up his game library to thousands of strange games with weird titles. All of the games are weird and subversive and some are downright wrong. Each time he plays these games they corrupt his soul a little more and his physical features begin to change, distort. Like playing the games is turning him into something wrong, something devious.

Could be something there but needs something more.

Maybe it’s about a kid going over to have a sleepover party at his friend’s house. And it’s his friend that has been morphed by a chipped console and he has to escape the friend, or end up becoming just like him.

I dunno … I’ll keep pondering on it.

Profits made from this blog will go right into my ramen fund. Any more will go right into any future storytelling projects.
