As a psychologist, here are some recommendations for dealing with bullying within the family:

  1. Validate the victim's feelings. Bullying can be extremely hurtful and damaging. Let them know that their feelings of hurt, anger, or fear are completely valid and understandable.

  2. Have an open conversation. Sit down with all family members involved and discuss the bullying behavior in a calm, rational manner. Don't accuse, but explain how the bullying actions make the victim feel.

  3. Set clear rules and consequences. Establish firm family rules against bullying of any kind - verbal, physical, or emotional. Agree on fair consequences that will be enforced consistently if bullying continues.

  4. Build empathy. Help the bully understand how their actions impact others. Use examples, role-playing, or have them imagine being the target.

  5. Boost self-esteem. Bullies often act out to cover their own insecurities. Find ways to build up the self-worth of all children through positive reinforcement.

  6. Model respectful behavior. Parents/adults must model kind, inclusive behavior they want to see. Call out bullying calmly when witnessed.

  7. Improve supervision. Increased parental/adult supervision, especially in situations where bullying occurs, can prevent incidents.

  8. Involve others if needed. For serious or escalating bullying, seek help from a counselor, mediator or other professionals who deal with family conflicts.

The key is addressing it promptly through open communication, firm limits, teaching empathy and creating an environment of mutual respect within the family.
