How do you handle office politics and the schemes and manipulation among people?
As an HR professional, I strive to maintain professionalism, fairness and integrity when dealing with office politics, schemes or manipulative behaviors. Here are some key principles I would follow:

Lead by example with ethical conduct. I would model the behaviors I expect from others - being honest, transparent and treating everyone with respect regardless of office cliques or allegiances.
Enforce policies consistently. I would apply workplace policies evenhandedly across the organization without playing favorites or allowing biases to influence decisions. Clear policies help provide an objective framework.
Promote open communication. I would encourage an environment where issues can be raised constructively without fear of retaliation. Listening impartially to all perspectives helps uncover manipulative tactics.
Protect whistleblowers. If someone reports unethical behavior in good faith, I would ensure there are no repercussions and their confidentiality is maintained to the fullest extent possible.
Mitigate conflicts early. At the first signs of brewing conflicts or power struggles, I would initiate meetings to air grievances and seek collaborative resolutions before situations escalate.
Provide conflict resolution training. Equipping managers and employees with skills to have courageous conversations and handle conflicts in a healthy manner reduces the need for underhanded tactics.
Hold people accountable. If manipulative or unethical behaviors occur despite prevention efforts, I would initiate investigations and dole out disciplinary actions commensurate with the misconduct.
The key is promoting a culture of trust, integrity and psychological safety so there is less perceived need or tolerance for political maneuvering in the first place. However, I remain vigilant to swiftly address any lapses.
