As a psychologist, if someone is trying to threaten me through the phone, the most important thing is to remain calm and prioritize safety. Here are some general guidelines for handling such a situation:

  1. Don't engage or antagonize: If someone is making threats, it's best not to escalate the situation further by engaging with them or responding in kind. Remain composed and avoid getting into an argument.

  2. Document everything: Try to take notes or record the conversation (if legally permissible in your area) to document the threats being made. This can be important evidence if needed later.

  3. Assess the risk: Try to evaluate whether the threats seem credible and the level of potential risk. Explicit threats of violence or harm should always be taken seriously.

  4. Set boundaries: Firmly but calmly convey that the threatening behavior is unacceptable and you will not tolerate it. State the consequences if it continues, such as terminating the call or involving law enforcement.

  5. Involve others if needed: If you feel unsafe or the threats are severe, don't hesitate to involve colleagues, building security, or law enforcement for your protection. Threats should be reported.

  6. Document and report: After the incident, thoroughly document what occurred, when, any witnesses, etc. Report credible threats to the appropriate authorities per your workplace protocols.

  7. Self-care: Being threatened can be very unsettling. Don't hesitate to debrief with a supervisor and take steps for your own mental wellbeing after such an event.
