Opinion-ology: Mary Poppins

in #blog6 years ago

I happen to bump in a movie "Saving Mr. Banks" during the holidays. At first, I have no idea as to what the movie is all about, as I haven't watched the trailer or I wasn't familiar of the movie (I am not exactly the cinema-goer type of person). I was checking out some good films to watch to start the year, I started watching this 2013 film and got interested when I saw Tom Hanks as one of the actors. I soon realized that the movie is about P. L. Travers and her script approval journey of the movie "Mary Poppins" (1964) movie. It appears that Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks) was trying to get the film rights of the book who is authored by P. L. Travers.

It showed that it took great courage for Ms. Travers to collaborate her ideas in making the Mary Poppins movie possible. My curiosity led me to watch Mary Poppins film as I have little, almost no recollection about the movie except for the song and now a very known word Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. And as I watched Mary Poppins, I have appreciated it on a different level. You know the feeling of being elated after watching a good movie, right? What I felt was even more to that. It's refreshing, and it's different.

Check out this screenshot on my phone. LSS (last song syndrome) for the whole album!

It's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Going back to the movie Saving Mr. Banks, I caught myself with some tears on the scene where Ms. Travers is watching the premiere where it's on the part that Mr. Banks is singing the song "Let's Go Fly a Kite". The scene is very innocent yet it meant so much to Ms. Travers, a signifying scene that Mr. Banks is "saved". Also, I can relate myself to Ms. Travers in a way. For me, just like her, I am quite reluctant to something, probably shielding myself to emotions, to vulnerability. And also the trait of being perfectly capable of doing things myself, definitely my trait. I even laughed at some point because I reflected while watching the movie. "That is so like me", I said to myself.

The journey of Mary Poppins - from writing the book to making it come to life in a movie gives us inspiration.

I encourage you to watch these two movies "Mary Poppins (1964)" and "Saving Mr. Banks (2013). Watch again if you already watched it. Especially that a new Mary Poppins movie is said to be released this year. I am excited about the upcoming movie and it is already in my to-watch-for movies. Be moved and be reminded that in every character lies a story, a behind the scene, a meaning.
