Memorial Day Weekend - Not Just Barbecues
The Memorial Day weekend has always had a special meaning for my family. We have a lot of military and ex-military in my family and more than one has made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Regardless whether you agree with the wars that the politicians start or not, the sacrifices that are made are deeply felt by the families of those who fight.

This is the American Legion hall named after my great uncle Russel MacKinder, First man to die from Stockbridge in Korea.
When I was growing up, Memorial Day weekend was always spent going to different cemeteries and cleaning up the graves and placing flowers. We did not have big barbecues and parties. It was always a very solemn thing and we did it with great respect and knowledge of why we were there. It was like this from as young as I can remember.
When it became official.
Memorial Day became an official Federal holiday in 1971, although it had been followed and observed for many years in this country and even way back into history. Societies have pretty much always honored those that have died during wartime. In the United States, this is now the Federal Holiday called Memorial Day.
Respect.
With the political landscape the way it is today, there is a lot of protest against war and the reasons why countries go to war. I do not want to discuss any of that in this post. I know there are those that will argue that those that serve in the military are just pawns that are used by the government.
This may be true, however, behind each of those soldiers is a family that will miss a son, brother, or father. Please keep this in mind during this holiday. You may disagree with the military and war, but we all know how it is to miss someone.
As always, thank you and God Bless!
