Being a Left-Handed in the world of Right-Handed Population

in #blog6 years ago

So I am a left handed person.

My orientation is left, I use my left hand for all those tasks which are done with right hand by right-handed population. The world is made according to comfort of a right-handed person and a left-handed goes through various kinds of struggles in daily life.

From the elbow wars at lunch & dinner tables to having difficulty in writing while sitting on Exam-desks. I still remember, in every exam I would get up before the exam starts and would ask the teacher to change my seating to my comfort. Most of the teachers would think I am saying it as trickery to cheat in exam, so before they could say anything, I would add on 'I can sit on the front desk (which used to be a table chair for the teacher) but please change my seating, I am a lefty and this seating impacts my writing speed'. Every teacher bought my front desk offer and it helped me in the exams at least.

But what about day-to-day life?

Writing in a spiral notebook.
Using scissors.
Using can openers.
The number pad on keyboard.
& so on.............

The list is long, but the reality is either we get used to everything just the way they are or we make some amendments. But there is one point in the list which I dislike the most.

Lets take the example through a bar.
In a bar, I would keep my drink on my left side and the person sitting to my left would also keep their drink on their right side which end up being the same side. To resolve this situation I always intentionally create some distance to whoever is sitting on my left. Be it the lunch table in office, the dinner table at home, the Drink counter with friends.

So, the other day I got into a little feud with one of my colleague who would intentionally sit on my left every day to tease me and I got irritated at the moment of time. Later on, I hit internet that day just to read on anything about the left-handed people that could make me feel good for that day at least.

Here is what I read and understood :

Our brains are directly connected to our hands.
Usage of left hand creates simulation in right brain and vice-versa.

On average, 90% population of the world is right handed and their left lobe of the brain is more active since right hand usage creates simulations in left portion of brain.
The other 10% percent which are the left handed think more through the right lobe of the brain. A left handed person creates more simulation in the right portion of brain because of the high usage of left hand. The right lobe of the brain is supposed to be supporting more creative and out-of-box thinking which explains why I am weirdly different( just kidding or maybe not :p).

I felt good after reading it that particular day and I went onto a new journey of reading about brain simulations which I am still continuing.

Thank you for reading :)

I think we all get around to adapting
We are quite a resilient bunch
Maybe not as much as a cockroach but close enough ;)
My brother is a leftie and took great pride in it
And I believe we all secretly want to be lefties hahaha

cockroach ahahaha great comparison.
Say Hi to your brother from my side :D

At least the upvote button is placed neither on the right, nor on the left, but in the middle. :)

hahaha funny comment

hi my fahter was left handed to. But in the earlier years in the school my dad have to change if he want or not it to the right hand. Today you can write with the left or the right hand.

yeah right, people try to change the left-handeds like its some kind of disease. My grandma is always behind me to do things with the right hand, i just don't listen to her.

Its an april fool fun. Wait for the surprise. I am also not sure. You can spread sneeze to others by commenting !sneeze

This user has already been infected! Sneezing at them again does not have any effect.

King Of Disease

hahahah this is funny

You have been infected by the King of Disease!

Will you quarantine yourself?

Or will you spread the plague?

King Of Disease

I'm left handed, too! I actually am selectively ambidextrous -- I write and use tools with my left hand, but throw a ball and darts with my right hand -- I didn't notice that I was a little right handed until I started playing sports.

Very cool article! I followed you and liked your post -- gotta support another lefty!

hehe i like this "gotta support another lefty". I am following you because i also want to support another lefty.

Haha thank you very much!

My first daughter is right handed and I am not sure on this yet but my 2nd daughter might be left handed. I try to get her to use her right but she just moves things to her other hand. I know this might make some things harder for her. Thanks for a little info on what she will face. Also, that is interesting she might be more creative.

hehe yes there are some gains for our pains as left handed

You should demand some minority benefits. Would you like to be classified under 'differently-abled" category?

hehe no since we can perform all the daily lives action with little discomfort.

Thanks for the insight into your life 🙂

Thanks for stopping by :)

I can totally related with this as I'm left handed and it's kind of annoying here because in our culture it's disrespectful to give people something with your left hand.. Like if you wanna pay the cab man or give your dad something and you do that with your left hand, then it's disrespectful, I do that all the time not intentionally but because I'm left handed and I get the crazy looks all the time, like why is she been disrespectful and I'm just tired of telling random strangers I'm lefted handed all the time. So I just own up to it, if you think I'm disrespectful because I give you something with my left hand then I am! I'm left handed and I'm just tired of apologizing for that!
