SPIRITUAL DWARFISM OR STUNTED GROWTH
12 FOR THOUGH BY THIS TIME YOU OUGHT TO BE TEACHERS, YOU NEED SOMEONE TO TEACH YOU AGAIN THE FIRST PRINCIPLES OF THE ORACLES OF GOD; AND YOU HAVE COME TO NEED MILK AND NOT SOLID FOOD.
13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
14 BUT SOLID FOOD BELONGS TO THOSE WHO ARE OF FULL AGE, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."
Hebrews 5:12-14 (NKJV)
The ultimate goal of whoever comes to Christ Jesus is to be like Him in character and demonstration of power. A number of people want to be like Him in the demonstration of power but not in character.
To be like Christ in power or character has a price to pay. Some people pray, fast and do a number of things to be like Christ Jesus in the demonstration of power, but they never paid attention to their character development—the building of their character.
We have different kinds of believers who claimed to be ministers but their lifestyle is contradictory to what they professed to be (2 Timothy 3:5,7; Titus 1:16).
Why are such believers not growing in character? In other words, Why are they not changing character-wise?
The answer to this question is found in our text, the above Bible passage, such people are said to "HAVE COME TO NEED [desiring only] MILK AND NOT SOLID FOOD (Hebrews 5:12).
There is a difference between the milk of the Word of God and the solid food of it!
There are believers who delighted in being fed with the milk of God's Word, rather than the solid food of it (Hebrews 5:12). But, a believer who is being fed with the milk only cannot be strong, though such might look plump with a glistering face or countenance; but such would not be healthily strong. Such a believer would not be able to do any work that requires strength or strong spiritual energy.
Milk is mainly for babies (1 Corinthians 3:1,2; 1 Peter 2:2; Hebrews 5:13). Even at a stage in a baby's growth, solid food had to be introduced to his meal and be weaned of milk only. It is quite unfortunate that many believers had been in the Christian faith for any number of years but they are yet to be weaned of taking milk, they still cling to the feeding-bottle, instead of growing up and be taking solid food. Even when the taking of milk only is no longer helpful or benefitial to them—because taking of milk at their age makes them frail or weak and not strong enough for heavy tasks which God may have for them or want them to do.
Now, what could be considered the milk of God's Word are messages that centered on mundanity; material or earthly things. But believers are admonished to set their minds on heavenly things:
1 IF THEN YOU WERE RAISED WITH CHRIST, SEEK THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE ABOVE, WHERE CHRIST IS, SITTING AT THE RIGHT hand of God. 2 SET YOUR MIND ON THINGS ABOVE, NOT ON THINGS ON THE EARTH. 3 FOR YOU DIED, AND YOUR LIFE IS HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD" (Colossians 3:1-3 NKJV).
Note:
• All your thoughts and aspirations should not only be based on material things, you should also have a desire or an aspiration to grow in the things of the the spirit, that is, in your relationship or walk with God.
• Your requests when you come to God in prayer should not only be about give me this or that, you should also think of being a usable vessel in God's hand; by being a blessing to others and be an instrument in the expansion of His Kingdom on earth (1 Timothy 3:1; 2 Timothy 2:19-21).
• You should desire or aspire to be used of God. The kingdom of God is not only about food or mundaneness—earthly and carnal things alone (Romans 14:17).
According to our text, you should not remain at the level of a believer who is in need of someone to teach him or her again the first principles of the oracles of God; even after you have been in the Christian faith for a number of years; when you ought to have been a teacher of the Word, teaching others—the new converts (Hebrews 5:12).
The truth is:
Whoever is on the milk alone, that is, whoever is taking milk only, without any solid food, would be unskilled in the word of righteousness and remained a baby believer (Hebrews 5:13).
However, solid food is said to be for those who are mature, full of age, who through the taking of the food, exercising with it, that is, feeding on the Word and practicing it, had their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Hebrews 5:14).
The solid food of the Word of God is the aspect of the Bible that reproves, corrects and gives directions about the right thing to do:
16 ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, AND IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE, FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION, FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, 17 THAT THE MAN [woman] OF GOD MAY BE COMPLETE, THOROUGHLY EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK" (2 Timothy 3:16,17 NKJV).
There are many so-called believers who would not want to read or hear about the aspect of the Bible that reproves or corrects them; all they wanted to hear is about the aspect that talks about being materially blessed (2 Timothy 4:2-4).
But the truth is, If you are such a believer, one who only wants the milk of God's Word, you cannot be strong and you would not be able to discern between good and evil; between what God delighted in and what He did not (Hebrews 5:14).
In conclusion; endeavour to work on your spiritual growth. Desire to know God the more and aspire to also be a vessel or an instrument of honour in His hand, being used to bless and better the lives of others (2 Timothy 2:19-21).
Peace.
