A red hibiscus in a home planter looks extremely attractive.
- Selecting the Right Pot and Preparing the Soil
Pot Size: The roots of a Hibiscus plant spread rapidly. Therefore, choose a large pot—at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter (made of clay or plastic)—to accommodate it. It is essential that the pot has drainage holes at the bottom to allow water to escape.
Soil Mixture: The Hibiscus thrives in fertile and slightly acidic soil. Prepare the ideal potting mixture as follows:
- Sunlight and Location Selection
The Hibiscus is a tropical plant that requires abundant sunlight. Place the potted plant in a part of your home—such as a south-facing or east-facing balcony or terrace—where it can receive 5 to 6 hours of direct, bright sunlight daily. If the plant receives insufficient sunlight, it may produce leaves, but it will fail to form flower buds.

- Proper Watering Guidelines
The soil in the Hibiscus pot should always be kept slightly moist.
During the summer months, the plant requires watering daily (sometimes both in the morning and the evening).
In winter, water the plant only when the top layer of the soil in the pot appears dry. Be careful not to let water stagnate in the pot; otherwise, the roots will begin to rot.

- Fertilizer for Excellent Flowering
The red hibiscus is considered a 'heavy feeder,' meaning it requires substantial nutrition.
Every 20 to 25 days, loosen the soil in the pot and add a handful of organic fertilizer.
To encourage a greater abundance of larger red flowers, apply a potassium-rich fertilizer—such as banana peel liquid fertilizer or dried tea leaf compost—twice a month.

- Pruning and Pest Protection
Pruning: Once a year—either during the spring season (February–March) or after the monsoon—be sure to lightly prune the plant. This stimulates the growth of new branches and helps the plant become bushier.
Pest Control: Infestation by white, sticky insects (mealybugs) is very common in hibiscus plants. To prevent this, spray the plant every 15 days with a mixture of neem oil and mild shampoo.
