Ok Steemit... some UI critique
Here are a few preliminary thoughts about things I'd love to see fixed - consider this a multiple #bugreport for #steemit. This is not complete.
User-visible Features
- Search: we have a blockchain, we have all the content available - we shouldn't be limited to searching the tag-cloud.
- Personalization: The main stream is prioritized across an aggregated market of upvotes and comments... with no reflection of personal connection. At least some optional constraints, ideally some inferred constraints based on obvious interest (with some non-filtered content thrown in to keep things fresh) would be nice. (In fairness... facebook and google+ both suck at this, but we're innovating right?)
- Exploration: Needs a better way than clicking tag-clouds on the side to explore topics. Semantic groupings of topics, inferred taxonomies, or whatever, aren't terribly hard (in the computer science sense of hard). Having an ability to go looking for stuff in context needs to be a thing.
- Draft mode. Seriously. No one can make serious content without saving drafts, and if they can't do it on the platform, they'll work around it off the platform.
User-Interface Bugs or Issues
- Markdown bullet lists interpret single newlines as new paragraphs, rather than as continuing lines.
- Style article title links in your own blog such that they aren't bolded merely by having been seen by your browser. If you're going to vary the style, use other meaningful signals.
Still... "beta", so totally get it. But this site will be hard for users who may primarily be consumers of content (which we don't want) if the site doesn't make finding things, sorting and filtering, and exploring easy.
Edit: I'm just going to keep updating this as I find stuff.
Bug: Posting a youtube link on the comments can make text disappear if the youtube url is in the same line as the text.
Eg:
take a look at this: (video link) = disappeared text
if you write it down as
take a look at this:
youtube link
...text appears ok.
Bug: A flag in the comments can sometimes make a comment vanish without a "reveal" button.
Feature request: Left/Center/Right-tag button in the editor.
Mind if I roll these up into the post?
Not at all.
Whoops. I guess I can't - steem-noob error on my part. After the 24 hours, I can't alter my post.
It's ok - it's the only comment anyway.
