Most rose varieties have five petals, but Rosa sericea's most distinctive feature is its four petals. These white or cream-colored flowers bloom in spring and early summer. Another distinctive feature of this plant are its thorns. One popular variety has large, flat, feather-like red thorns. When sunlight shines on these thorns, they sparkle like gems. Its leaves are fern-like and silky, with 7 to 11 small leaflets. Its fruits (rose hips) are deep red or orange, round or pear-shaped.

Medicine and Local Uses This plant's importance in Himalayan cultures goes beyond mere beauty: Source of vitamins: Its fruits are rich in vitamins C, A, and E. They are used locally to make herbal teas and jams. In Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine, its flowers and fruits are used to treat stomach ailments, coughs, and colds. Because of its sharp thorns, it is often planted as a natural security wall around fields.
