How To Get Links From Big Media Sites
Hey JesStartups
Marketing your business be it with an agency or by yourself is an uphill battle, and those first few years are going to suck. Trying to get recognition on social media is time-consuming, trying to runs is costly; trying to rank on Google for the right keywords is an art. Each one of these channels can be amazing for any business who cracks it, but my favourite for sustainable traffic has to be SEO.
Once you're in Google's good books, you're in the money, but it takes time and considerable effort to get there. One way to supercharge your site's rankings is to secure media mentions on large media sites.
It may sound simple, but it's harder than you think and relies a lot on the network you have and the relationships you build.
The reach out
Information is something that can either age well or age badly depending on the sector you're in, and you can use this to your advantage. If you find articles with inconsistencies, broken links, lacking context or require additional information you should consider reaching out to these sites and provide them with the information they need to correct their article and hopefully secure a link in the process.
The informant method
Many site owners and marketers don't know that there is a shadow system where journalists source their information from at times. If you're not present on these platforms, you miss out on opportunities to get media mentions.
I call this method, the informant method to link building and it involves jumping on queries journalists put out in these shadow sourcing systems and ensuring that you're seen as an authoritative figure when answering their queries.
The guest contributor
Depending on the niche you're in, you may have big sites that allow for quest contributions. To find them you should google your niche along with "guest post", "guest writer", "guest contributor" and build a list of sites from there, reach out to them and pitch them your idea for an article.
The opportunist
Popular media sites like Buzzfeed to Business insider love creating listicles, because the resonate with audiences as a quick summary, but these lists can age pretty severely. If you spot a listing that may need an addition, it could be your business or a complementary business you can reach out and get them to update their post to make it more relevant and comprehensive and secure a link back to yourself as a thank you.
It may not be in the same post; it could even be in a future post. Remember to be flexible and try to feed the journalist as if the ideas is their own or pitch on how much better it will be for their traffic, rankings or improving their content.
