Why Microsoft's New Surface Go Avoids Fighting The iPad?

in #business6 years ago

Following yesterday’s launch of the Surface Go, it’s worth taking a moment to think where this device fits into Microsoft’s portfolio of Surface devices. The tablet has been built with a price point in mind - it has taken some strict engineering to get to the $399 retail mark - and a number of compromises have been made. Microsoft clearly think it is fit for purpose, but what purpose is that?

Apple’s Education event in March drew a lot of online attention, not least because of the update to the iPad range and a new entry-level iPad at $329. ow Microsoft comes along with a cloud focused tablet in a similar price range, arguably offering the same features.

But while Redmond will be happy for the Surface Go if it takes over the education market, the signs are there that this is not the real prize.
