For the same reason people stay in relationships they don't like. Often in life, you need an antagonist, something to bitch about...or maybe it's.just that you're used to it, to doing something you don't like and so choose to subject yourself again and again to that thing, despite not liking it. It's the status quo and most folks don't want to upset the status quo in their lives :)
And besides, with Steemit, there's always the remote dream of making some big cash. Sure, it doesn't work that way, but you never know when you get lucky.

Much easier to complain than to do something about it. Although complaining is also doing something, in the long run only complaining doesn't solve things until there's someone doing something more.
You're absolutely right about the status quo and the money facts.
I think for many here, the chance of making some money keeps them considering some have made decent amounts here before.
Status quo is interesting and I also think that some people get bitter when things don't go to their plans. I often find that what many people complain about, they do also.
