Cambodian New Year
Hello Everyone! Soksabay! (it means, how are you?)
Today is our Cambodian New Year Celebration at school. "Rik reay bun jol chnam pro pey ney Khmer"!!!It means "Happy Khmer New Year"! For most of you,you don't know that we do celebrate 3 kinds of New Year here in Cambodia. We have Chinese New Year every February, Cambodian New Year every April and of course our New Year which is every January. We usually celebrate New Year for at least 1 or 2 days I think. Which is December 31 and January 1. But for Cambodian New Year they do celebrate in a week :) that's why it's a wow, wow, wow for us to rest from work while the people goes to their own provinces and celebrate New Year with their families. Our kids at school celebrated Cambodian New Year today before going to their hometown. We had Cambodian games and the kids performed their Cambodian Dance too.So much fun today experiencing how they celebrate their New Year.
So for 1 week Phnom Penh will be like a zombie town where cars, buses, trucks and motorcycle are not around. No accident, no traffic!! Thank you Lord! To some foreigners and Filipinos they went out of Phnom Penh to spend their holidays but for me stay at home, rest and spend more time with God. :) The saddest thing sometimes during Cambodian New Year is where a lot of people steal especially if there's no one at home because they went to their provinces. So we really have to lock the doors but if the people really wanted to steal they break the locks and do everything to open up the house just to steal. So my Cambodian friend would say, teacher, be careful especially Cambodian New Year, a lot of thief because they need money. But the bottom line of these is to enjoy their New Year with them and this is also a time where all family gathers together and spend time to their parents and family in their individual provinces. Thank you for reading and support!
