Mercedes-Benz G-Class – The Icon of Luxury Off-Roading

in #car8 hours ago

The story of the G Wagon began in the early 70s when the dream of Mercedes developing a military car came to fruition. Mercedes began the transformation of the dream by initiating the development process in 1972, and in 1973 a wooden prototype was presented. In 1974 a real prototype began the testing process, where it was subjected to some of the toughest conditions known at the time, including extreme off-road terrain, desert heat, and mountainous landscapes. In 1975, orders began being delivered to militaries, but it was not until 1979 when the first non-military G model was released to the public.

The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen (G-Wagon) is a go-anywhere SUV built to survive the harshest conditions, and for more than 40 years it has continued to prove that it is a capable, rugged, user-friendly, and dependable all-wheel-drive vehicle. Over time, it has evolved from a purely utilitarian military vehicle into a luxury icon while still maintaining its original boxy design and off-road strength.

The earlier G-Wagons were available in several body options: a two-door convertible, 2-door pickup truck, 3-door wagon, and 5-door wagon. Each version was designed to serve different purposes, from military transport to civilian off-road use. Today, it has become one of the most recognizable luxury SUVs in the world.

Used G-Class prices at BE FORWARD range between US$ 31,000 and US$ 431,000, depending on model year, condition, mileage, and specifications. High-performance AMG variants and newer models tend to be priced at the upper end of the range.

Engine

The G-Class comes fitted with several engines; here we will take a look at some of those engines’ specifications as seen below. Over the years, Mercedes has continuously improved performance, efficiency, and emissions while maintaining strong off-road capability.
One of the earliest engines to be fitted on the G-Wagon is the 2.3-liter (M115.973) 4-cylinder SOHC petrol engine with an average fuel consumption of 6.3 km/l. This engine produces 90 horsepower and torque of 123.17 lb.ft. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 17 seconds with a maximum speed of 150 km/h, making it suitable for basic utility and off-road use.

The turbocharged 3.0-liter (OM642 DE30) 6-cylinder diesel engine offers better efficiency and torque for demanding driving conditions. It produces 184 horsepower and 295 lb.ft of torque, with fuel consumption of around 8.7 km/l. It accelerates 0–100 km/h in 13 seconds with a top speed of 160 km/h.

The 3.2-liter (M112 E32) 6-cylinder SOHC petrol engine delivers 211 horsepower and 221 lb.ft of torque. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 12.1 seconds with a maximum speed of 178 km/h, offering a balance between performance and reliability.
Modern versions include the bi-turbo 4.0-liter (M176) V8 engine, producing 510 horsepower and 561 lb.ft of torque. This allows the G-Class to accelerate 0–100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 210 km/h, bringing supercar-level performance into an off-road SUV.
Other notable engines include the 4.3-liter (M113 E43), 5.0-liter (M113 E50), and 5.4-liter (M113 E54) V8 engines, all known for durability and strong performance. Power is transferred through various transmissions including 4-speed and 5-speed automatics, 7G-Tronic, and modern 9G-Tronic systems.

Interior & Exterior

Interior

The interior looks sublimely old-fashioned but also modern in execution. The air vents are round, while the speakers are uniquely integrated into the design, giving the cabin a distinctive personality. The dashboard features dual 12.3-inch digital displays, offering a modern digital cockpit experience with premium graphics and controls.
There are plenty of storage spaces throughout the cabin, including removable cup holders, door pockets with bottle holders, seatback pockets, and an overhead sunglasses compartment. The G-Class also provides generous headroom for all passengers, while front seats offer good legroom despite the large center console. Rear passengers benefit from flat flooring and comfortable seating space.
Boot capacity stands at 667 liters with the rear seats in place and expands to 1,246 liters when the seats are folded, making it practical for both daily use and long trips.

Exterior

The exterior design of the G-Wagon has been carefully preserved over the decades, making it one of the few vehicles instantly recognizable worldwide. Its boxy shape, upright stance, exposed door hinges, and spare wheel mounted on the rear door remain signature design elements.
While the design remains iconic, modern versions include redesigned body panels, improved aerodynamics, LED lighting, and a strengthened chassis. The vehicle still retains its signature door sound and rugged build, reinforcing its identity as both a luxury and off-road machine.

Features

From its inception, the G-Class has evolved significantly in technology and safety. Earlier models were simple and functional, but modern versions are equipped with advanced systems that enhance comfort, entertainment, and driver assistance.
The latest G-Class includes the Mercedes COMAND infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, satellite radio, USB ports, and a premium 15-speaker sound system. Comfort features include heated and ventilated seats, massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control, a sunroof, and wireless connectivity.
Safety features are equally advanced, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, rearview camera, park assist, driver attention monitoring, and Mercedes Pre-Safe system.
