Small appreciation may kill employee's honesty

I am an executive manager in my company currently. When I started working with a company, my GM (Operations) used to tell me "you are good worker" and he used to allot over me with more responsibilities of job. Then slowly slowly he started giving work loads of 2 staffs and later 3 staffs. Imaging now, a little appreciation can kill a honesty of one good employee.
