불사초는 일명 연계초(沿階草)라고도 부르는데 백합과 다년생 상록초본 식물의 뿌리이다.

동의보감에 보면 전라, 경상, 충청도에서 나며 심장과 폐와 위에 좋다고 기록되어 있다. 가뭄에도 잘 견디고 응달에서도 잘 자라며 기름지지 못한 땅에서도 잘 자라며 겨울철에도 죽지않고 무더운 여름철에도 무럭무럭 자라는 생명력이 아주 강한 식물이기에 불사초란 이름을 지니고 있는지도 모른다.

하루는 진시황이 궁녀들을 데리고 궁중안을 거닐고 있을때 난데없이 아름다운 새 한 마리가 풀잎 한 개를 물고 날아왔다. 진시황이 기히여겨 귀곡자(鬼谷子) 선생에게 "저기 저 아름다운 새 한 마리가 물고 온 저 잎은 도대체 무슨 잎인가?" 고 물었다. 귀곡자선생이 진시황에게 "저 꽃잎은 동해신주(東海神州)에 있는 불사초 옳습니다. 죽은 사람의 시체를 저 풀잎으로 3 일 동안 덮어 놓으면 다시 살아난다는 신기한 풀입니다." 고 아뢰었다.

진시황이 귀곡자 선생의 말을 조용히 듣고나더니 "신기한 풀잎도 있군! 즉시 오백명의 동남(童男) 과 오백명의 동녀(童女)를 동해신주(東海神州)로 파송하여 불사초를 캐오너라" 고 어명을 내렸다.

진시황때 대완(大宛) 지방에 많은 백성들이 영문을 모른 채 죽어갔다. 새들이 이름모를 이상한 풀잎을 물고와서 죽은 사람들의 얼굴위에 떨어뜨렸다. 3 일 후에 죽은 사람들이 모두 살아났다는 전설이 있다.

이시진의 본초강목에 보면 이 풀의 뿌리는 보리알에 수염이 달린 모양과 같고 잎은 부추(野韭菜)와도 같고 줄풀(苽) 처럼 생겼다. 엄동설한에도 시들지 않기 때문에 인동(忍冬)이란 이름을 얻었다. 신농본초경에 보면 인동을 많이 먹으면 몸이 가벼워지고 늙지 않으며 피부도 아름다워지고 기침도 멎게하고 불면증과 변비에도 좋다고 기술되어 있다.

신경쇠약환자는 인동을 끓여서 하루 세 차례 만 마셔도 효과를 본다. 즉 정신을 보(補)해 주기 때문에 양신지(養神芝)라고도 부른다. 위궤양, 12 지장궤양, 방광석 등에는 차전초를 섞어 함께 끓여 마시면 치료된다. 그 외에 만성기관지염, 관절염, 소화불량, 폐결핵, 탈모증(脫毛症) 등 여러 종류의 질병을 고치는데 사용된다.

대표적인 처방으로 인동 60 gm, 반하 9 gm, 인삼 6 gm, 감초 4 gm, 대추 12 개와 쌀 6 gm 을 섞어 만드는 인동탕(忍冬湯)은 기침을 멎게하고 가래가 목구멍 속에 걸려 있으면서 밖으로 나오지 않는 증상과 목구멍과 입안이 항상 건조한 사람, 손과 발은 물론 앞가슴이 뜨거운 증상을 없애준다. 인동탕은 금궤요약(金궤要略)에 나오는 맥문동탕(麥門冬湯)이다.
