CaribArt Workshop with Oasis Academy South Norwood
caribArt did a workshop at Elizabeth James Gallery today with students from Oasis Academy Arena in SouthNorwood.
At school they are exploring ‘great women’ for #blackhistorymonth so today they learned about #JanellePennyCommissiong.
A woman who’s timeless inner and outer beauty shines bright where ever she goes. She changed the world when she represented #TrinidadandTobago in the 1977 #MissUniverse competition in Santo Domingo, DominicanRepublic. She was crowned Miss Universe 1977 and became the first woman of colour to ever be crowned Miss Universe, she set the tone for women of colour from around the world to enter the pageant and feel that they also had a chance of emerging Miss Universe for their country.
During her reign as Miss Universe, she was an advocate for #blackrights and world peace. Commissiong was awarded the Trinity Cross, Trinidad and Tobago’s highest National award and even had her image on two Trinidad and Tobago stamps.
The children were fascinated by the story and were very well bahaved. A great time was had by all! A pleasure it was indeed 😊
