Some faces of the cats we rescued over the past year

in #catslast month (edited)

While our main focus is dogs we also help cats and even monkeys when the need calls. Dogs remain our primary focus simply because there are so many of them here in Krabi and cats have a tendency to stay hidden and don't socialize nearly as much as dogs do. Cats also tend to die off (sadly) a lot faster than dogs do because the mothers here in Krabi frequently abandon their young for some reason. I suppose the lack of food has the mother lose interest or ability to provide for the kittens and this is why it happens. We help any kittens that we can find but cat mothers tend to have their babies in some remote place and often, we are not even aware that they exist and therefore cannot help them. We do when we can though and here are some photos of the ones we have helped.

Like many of the tomcats here, this guy got injured in a fight that probably took place over a girlfriend or the cat version of such a thing. We were able to save his eye.

I don't fully remember this one other than one particular characteristic that stand out in my mind. This cat was able to fall asleep standing up and had apparently lived in an area that was free from dangers and therefore it would just close its eyes and frequently fall down in slumber. It was cute and the cat never got hurt because of it.

You know you have gained the trust of a cat when it turns over and allows you access to its belly. I still would advise caution when this happens with a cat that you don't know though because cats all over the world are known for their unpredictable reactions to things and they can cause a lot of damage really quick if they decide to freak out.

Generally speaking cats are far less likely to allow us to get near them, let along pick them up or put them in a crate to get them medical attention. This "stay away" attitude also makes it quite difficult for us to even determine if they need help. There are exceptions though and most of the time these exceptions come from cats that were born at or dropped off at temples. At temples the cats become accustomed to being around humans and even dogs and monkeys and therefore they are not afraid when you approach them. These constitute about 90% of the cats that we end up helping, such as this little lovely that I am holding here.

This skinny boy had to have extensive and expensive major surgery after being hit by a car. He ended up losing his leg because at the time we were in a financial crisis and the surgery to save his leg was going to cost 15,000 Baht or around $500. We had to make a choice to either amputate his leg or face infection that would end his life prematurely. Thankfully this cat tripod has been adopted and is living the good life as an indoor kitty now.

Abandoned kittens are something that we encounter every now and then. This particular story was one of great success because it was very touch and go there for a while as we were concerned that we were going to lose this kitten as well as the others that we found along with it. Here you can see the "after" picture

That's quite a difference eh? It just goes to show what a little bit of compassion can do for an animal because other than antibiotics and clean water and food, there wasn't much else we could do for the baby. This cat also ended up getting adopted and we are delighted that this is the case.

We help cats all that we can and strangely, they are more frequently adopted than the dogs are. I guess cats are just easier to look after.
